Seems like the most common problem is the ASD relay. It's cheap ($10.00). You could replace it and go from there......
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

Seems like if the computer controls the car and diagnosis a problem, it should be able to narrow the problem down better than 4 to 8 possibles🥴    And they wonder why mechanics throw parts at them.

Dogs make everything better, even broken trucks.

...and just good company to drink a beer with😁

Sugar doesn't look too happy in the back seat.
She did get the full treatment on this "training trip".
At first she was protective towards the tow truck driver but then saw I was cool with him,  she started to relax.
Once we were rolling she fell asleep.

I think the crank or cam sensors is what caused the ASD relay to activate.
Looking at some videos I am surprised they are easy to get to.  Both near the front of the engine.
At 177,000 both should/will be replaced.
Also need to check a connector under the power steering reservoir and a capacitor in the wiring somewhere.

I replaced both crank and cam sensors . Took it for a long drive and my gas milage jumped up to 16.3mpg's.  😳
A few days later it took a few tries to get it to start,  so I replaced the ASD relay. It isn't labeled under that name in the relay/fuse box.  It's labeled as "engine" relay.
At autozoo,  we had to cross reference the numbers on the top.  He gave me a headlight relay but didn't work.  I suggested we use a starter relay and it fired right up.  So far no issues.

Couple cars at work.  Convertible top and this elcamino is getting the interior put back together, box of parts and screws to sort out.

I took the Pontiac out for a spin after giving it a wash. To my delight my notebook said
"waxed and vacuumed" the last day before the winter hibernation.
You can see my new wagon on jacksands inside the garage door.

This is my tip of the day: My "chamois" which I dry the car with after washing. It's a
barb fitting for a 1/4" air hose.

The piece of hose is there just to protect the car, I inevitable tend to touch the car
once or twice every time I blow the water off of it. Works a charm, and there's no
risk of scratching the paint with grit caught in a chamois or towel. The paintjob on
this car is not great by any measure, but I'm lazy, and it's easy, so it's a win.

Nice Pontiac Essex. My uncle bought one new in 1957, Cheiftain 2dr hardtop. It was a pinkish silver with white top. He had it untill the early 70s.

Here's a song to listen to when you wash it next time. Not exactly right but "It's a Pontiac"!  8)

Great looking Pontiac!
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

Thank you , sammons, sixball and TFoch!

Nice Mustang, Rattiac, it's going to look great when it's done. Not much that brightens up a convertible like a new top.

I've got buddy who put one on his Mustang. Done pretty decent job for his first doing it, had one little wrinkle.

I'll bet Rattiac could walk Chopper thru the install, if he's willing.   My brother had never seen the inside of a manual transmission before. I walked him thru the M-21 rebuild out of his '67 Camaro on a 2hr phone call. We were both surprised that worked. 😁  It's still working great 30 yrs later.
