Probably one of the longest vids I've done.  Day 2 and 3 at Bonneville.
Had to add a name in the team I forgot so here's the new link.

Cool stuff. Hope get back there someday. Did you see this? The engine is the 413" Dodge flathead six I sold  toon one if the Montana Dodge Boys a tearers ago. Chris King I think. They are running the Fast 4 Dodge banger.

Well got out to speedweek.  A few of the crew and  Sid were camping.  I got there just in time cause a neighbor who had too much beer in the sun tried starting a fight.  We got him out of camp.  Later that night the police showed up.  He called the cops on himself.  Total idiot.

Car gone through tech the day before so we made our way to the line.  Spent most of the day just inching along.  As we was 2nd from the start line,  the driver in and car started.  As it was idling it started to stumble then,  Boom.  Blew off a few panels, hurt a crewmember and a small fire which was put out quickly but no run was made.  Disappointing weekend.
Not sure of the cause of that explosion but maybe a possible  leak.
Definitely a dangerous sport.

Most people don't understand the danger of speed and all it takes to make it.

It was confirmed today one of the AN lines had a pinhole leak and when the car was accidentally shut off,  then restarted.  The starter sent the spark off that ignited the vaporized alcohol fuel.  Ka boom. 💥
Funny cause I don't remember it actually shutting off.  I had my back turned to move the ez-up but it blew my hat forward and watched a panel fly by a few feet away.  Scared a bunch of spectators running away.  Scared me too,  like a grenade going off.
Probably best it happened there instead of out on the course.

It always scared me that you can't always see an alcohol fuel fire. It is there, it is hot, but you can't see it. I'm glad it wasn't worse. And an explosion standing still is way better than one at speed several miles from immediate help.

Rattiac, glad you didn't get hit by anything. It can happen so fast without warning.

Been around racing most my life. Dad taught me early to never turn your back on a race car. Years of drag racing i've seen a lot of bad stuff and keep my distance. Exploding clutches, rear ends, u-joint/drive shafts and a lot of shrapnel from exploding engines.

Sixball, that alcohol is some serious s#$t. Back in the early 80s at the dirt track, a bad crash in the middle of 1 and 2 corner. The guy had flipped his sprint car hard, on its side. It knocked him out and he was at 7/8 full throttle. I was close and ran to see if i could help. About that time a hand grabbed me and damn nert broke my arm. It was my uncle Jim, he said wait on the saftey crew, its on fire. I said i don't see a fire yet. He said see light blue haze, he's running alcohol. I thought the were still gasoline🤯

I've seen a few  guys severely burned in alcohol fires. Most were trying to help drivers get out of crashes and had no idea they had run into a fire.

I believe he's running E85. Cause I saw flames,  it was kinda slow motion after the bang.  When I turned back to the car,  everyone was just staring not saying/doing anything frozen. (Like the movie was put on pause but im the only one seeing it). So I yelled out fire, fire, fire and then people started moving bringing extinguishers and officials yelling "get back" to the crowd.
It did burn some wires but was put out quickly.  I guess halon is too expensive and I breathed in some of the dust,  lost my voice later that night.
I may just keep my distance when coming up to the line and film them farther away.

I'm  going up to Idaho this weekend to pick up a 47-54 chevy front str8 axle for the 32 and probably stop by his place to check out the car,  help if I can.
Oh sixball.  The car you showed,  there is one there like that and it was pulling a race car to the line.  Actually doing towing duty.

I posted something about your axle on that thread.

Yes that is the car with my old engine in it. The Montana Dodge Boys run several cars. I bought that engine for a vintage engine lakester but should have payed attention to the rules. It is 413 ci and the limit in vintage engine classes ie 375 ci. I would have been in regular B/G Lakester with the record at the time was nearing 300 mph. We couldn't even afford the tires much less the dual fire suppression systems for the engine compartment and driver compartment and a bunch more safety equipment. We were just looking for fun and not a record but to run it we had to pass tech in that class. So when a friend told me he had found a home for the engine I let it go to a better place. I get a ride in it someday!  8) Now I need to decide what the do with the nose cone for the Honest John missile we got for the body. (our first nuke surface to surface weapon) :o

And World of Speed 2024.

Hey Sixball,  here's a cool video with that car and your engine.
https://youtu.be/sWmih6AFbPw?si=41Ia2i3x3QXa0ktZ

This winter I'll probably go up and help Sid put the streamliner back together.  I'm already thinking of things we could do differently or I could improve on.
Probably bring my truck/trailer to park near the starting line,  cause getting stuck out there getting burnt sucked.

Thank you!  That's it! I knew when Vic and I were pulling that engine it would find a special place. It did! I'll get a ride in it someday.  Just want to stand near and hear it run. :) Just this afternoon I looked over the fence of the guy I we bought the Honest John nose cone (Bottle Rocket) from and saw a large belly tank. He knows the value but he likes me.  ::)
