New member with a 1934 Chevy Master
« on: November 16, 2015, 08:30:40 PM »
Hey. I’m a newbie here and my name is Duke.  I’m 56 and own an automotive shop in Kyle called Master-Tech Automotive. My web is www.master-techautomotive.com.
Thumbs up to all the veterans here. I am a war vet myself. I have been working on cars for a living since 1982 and still love it. I wouldn’t do anything else except maybe build these old cars and trucks in a nice 10,000 sq. ft. Central HVAC shop on a nice piece of land right next to really nice ranch house. Get up whenever I want, not have to talk to customers all day, just to myself while I’m building some nice rod, wait,  I already talk to myself when I’m building rods, anyways, It would have a powder coat room and nice huge  spray booth and mixing room, lathe, mill, cnc machines. All this if I hit the lottery. I never play it so someone will have to Will me the money and we know that won’t happen so I think I will just wake up and smell the roses and go back to work.

I  bought a 1934 Chevy Master out of Maryland. It’s all steel. I have been wanting one of these since a guy tried to trade me a 1930 2Dr Coupe with a rumble seat for a 1970 Mustang I did a resto mod on. He backed out so I have had my sights set on getting one ever since. I sold the Mustang to a guy in N.J. A friend of mine who hauls car privately took the Mustang to N.J. and while he was on his way there I bought this car so he agreed to swing over and get the car and bring it back along with some Arkansas rain, which I will explain later.

The original owner in West VA did a nice job on the frame and body. The paint is 12 years old but is still very presentable. You will see in some of the later pics just what I mean. A member of my family does pro auto detailing and spent 2 days on it and man did it ever transform.

The frame was powder coated, the underbody was painted throughout and rhino lined in the places that get the most abuse. The interior was sealed and painted, all the interior inside the panels was sealed and coated and sound deadener was applied. I had to peal some off of the floors when I welded my seat bracket mounts and I wanna tell you what, that crap is hell to get off once it has been given some time to setup.

I did not care for the jaguar electric buckets that sat too high above the body and also did not care for the color. It wasn’t too bad I just had other things in mind.

I have quite a few pictures I want to share so I will add more about it as I go and hopefully if someone is doing their car and had an idea of doing something I have done on this one and wanted to know what it would look like before they did it, then I hope it can be of some help. Lord knows I looked online for 2 weeks every day to get ideas and locate parts.

The first pics are of the car how I got it.

Thanks for having me here.

The rear axle was 2" too far forward. It has a Monte Rear Suspension so I bought G body upper 2 way adjustable control arms and G body lower 2 way adjustable control arms to get the rear end centered better in the wheel well. Then the too short drive shaft fell out. Had a new one build. I also had to square the body on the frame because the right front tire was inside the fender an 1 1/2" more than the left.

Welcome to the forum Duke.  Nice 34 Chevy!
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

Interesting 34 master.  The car started life as either a 3 window or 5 window coupe and got decapitated.  Somebody did a great job doing it.

The giveaway is the windshield is a closed car fisher body, the stock one is a full windshield metal casting.  The other tell is the dashboard panel, stock it sits deep under the wood collar that ties the door posts together

Only a 34-35 chev nerd like me would know this.  I had a guy try to trade me a 33 master convert at the NSRA nats in Tulsa  OK 1973

Thanks for the info. I did not know any of that. The original owner told me it was indeed a 5 window before and he added a 33 roadster cowl.

Duke, prior owner got his year wrong on the cowl.......your car has a 34 cowl , as shown 2-3 posts above in picture.     33 cowl is very narrow in that area, one of the few ways I can pick 33--34 cars differences.

A 33 or a 34 chev coupe, doors on a 5 window are shorter and a 3 window would make for a much longer door.

Welcome Duke from Kentucky, as I'm sure you have already figured out there are guys on here with a lot of knowledge about these old Bowties, by the way you have a nice looking 34.

Now I need to see the difference in order to relate the 2 different windshields. When I search 5 window master I see windshields like mine and some that look to have a trim piece on the outside edge.
How would someone go about in changing it to a closed fisher body windshield ?

I need the knowledge because the guy I bought it from hardly knows anything about the build and now I am wondering why the original owner would tell me it had a 33 roadster cowl

When people ask me what I have I want to be correct

OKAY HERE WE GO.........
: a ROADSTER has a moveable windshield that opens.
A roadster does not have rollup side windows it has side cloth curtains that are mounted into the doors with special rods
Generally a roadster has wind wings mounted to the windshield roadster posts.
The roadster body has hidden door hinges, latches and strikers.
The roadster body was not made by Chevrolet nor fisher body , it was supplied to Chevrolet by an outside supplier .

; A cabriolet /convertible has a fixed cast metal windshield that does not open.
The windshield frame is a one piece cast unit as per the pictures.
The cab/convert has side vent windows on winders
The body is produced by Fisher body and uses hinges, latches , strikers locks all the same as the other 34 master closed cars.

If this car still has its factory aluminum firewall plate, and you post the 34-... number I can tell you whether you car was originally a 3 window or a 5 window.  The doors will be much longer on a 3 window body.

Your windshield system is common to all other 33--34 Chevrolet closed cars made by Fisher.

study the pictures
