Parking brake with rear disc's
« on: April 16, 2014, 09:11:50 PM »
One requirement for NJ inspection for a street rod is a parking brake. I have a 57 Chevy rear with GM disc brakes on my 32. I picked up a pair of new 80-85 Caddy Seville calipers . The piston can be manually adjusted for a parking brake. I have a Lokar floor mounted brake handle, and Lokar cables . Has anyone done anything like this ? I'm kinda flying blind on this. Another problem is the calipers on the rear were mounted on the front side of the rotor . I believe I can mount the Caddy caliper to pull from the back . Looking for ideas and advice . Thanks,

EDNY

Only part I can help with is caliper location..I have (2) Blazer axles...the older one has the calipers on the back, the newer one has the caliper on the front.  Remember looking at both and the calipers are the same...would only need to flip them (right to left) so the bleeder fitting is on top.

Got a set of these on my 40 Ford Pick up  I installed 85 Seville caddy  disc brakes  on a 74  Nova rear end....Adjusting  them to get the right gap is a very important. .You  need to start with good calipers....  rebuilt one at least with good pistons...the main problem I had was master cylinder was under the floor and bleeding them was a head ache...I used lokar cables for my emergency hand brakes....I don't know if you know this but when you get these set up you must use  emergency brakes  to keep them  set up properly...goggle 1985 Seville  Cadillac  brakes...Car Quest had a good article on setting the gap...there is a lot of info on the net that helped me set mine up.....  let  me if you need any pics of my set up............    here is one site I used...........FATnLOW

Edny, whats this your saying? I too have a diskbrake S10 rear axle and mine is the forward caliper mount and if what your saying is right, you saved me a ton of work . I was worried the calipers as they are now, were too close to the frame and might somehow touch so I was going to notch the frame for clearance. If I can swap from side to side, the problem is solved. I would go look now but it has been snowing for the last 2 days. Starting to wonder if spring is still coming .

FatnLow , thanks for the info. I did download the info on adjusting them and also got a Chilton Cadillac book, just wanted to see how well they work from people who are using them . Thanks for your info. If it wasn't for State inspection I would just use a brick for a parking brake !
