Front coilover spring weights?
« on: March 21, 2013, 08:56:06 AM »
Getting ready to spring (pun intended) for a set of Speedway Motors front coilovers and figure I need the 375lb spring rate.  The choice is between the 375 and 500. Considering the 375 rate because my 33 Master 5 window, has a small block set back behind the Mustang II crossmember,700R4 trans, hood but no fenders.

Don't have scales to work with and from reading post on other forums..estimate that the 500 rate would be too stiff..what do you think?

Take a look at the below chart. You should be able to get pretty close to your weight front and rear and then go to one of the spring suppliers websites and use their online calculators to figure out your correct spring rate. I didn't figure it out but 500 lbs does sound like too much.

Moose...handy little reference sheet..don't want to loose that one.

Looks like the 375 lb springs are in order.

Thanks

Finally broke down and bought my front coil overs from Speedway, ordered the 375lb springs ($25 off code ;D) Using tubular lower arms that were designed for stock coil springs and shocks.  Removed the welded in stock coil springs mounts from the lower arms and installed the coilovers. That didn't work....couldn't get enough adjustment out of them and worried that I might need the heavier spring.

Today I removed the shock mounting brackets from "under" the control arms and welded them on the top..probably only about 1-1/2"higher..but the coil over are perfect and only used about 5 turns from the bottom to get my correct ride height.

Now I need to clean up the anti-seize..on my tools, me, my clothes..

That's a real nice piece of re-engineering . Looks like they were manufactured that way!
