Great! So my exhaust pieces came in early this week and I am in the process of cutting, fitting, welding. I didn't buy mufflers yet because I wanted to have a better idea of how I was going to run the exhaust and how much room I would have. The question is.......what type mufflers are you guys using? I am looking for something that isn't too loud that I can't have a conversation or hear the radio. Incidentally, I have about 22" x 12" space to work with. Thanks! Jim

Just to get the thread going...I like good old solid steel glass packs (Cherry Bombs etc). Noticed that when they are mounted close to the engine and with a long tail pipe they aren't so loud.

I don't like a loud cars period...but my 34 coupe has glass packs and it's not a loud car.  What I don't like on the 34 is that the exhaust exits out the side in front of the rear tires...so the purring is constant. On my 33 - will be running glass packs and exhaust pipes that extend out the rear tail pan.

I agree. The last 2 cars I put on the road both had glass packs with long tail pipes, and with 22 inches you could use a large glass pack on your car/

I chose Hooker Turbo mufflers because I've use them before, they're not too loud and i like the tone.  I guess I did it backwards.  I mounted my mufflers where I wanted them and they fit best.  Then I ran my exhaust pipes to meet them.  Here's a picture of what I did.  Tom

If you are worried about being too loud any of the chambered mufflers will work. If you are running dual exhaust (obviously) you don't need a large diameter system (2-1/4" max). I'm using the Cherry Bombs because I got them for $20 each (new) really long mufflers.

I used the Hooker Super Comp Turbo's they sound good not to loud. Check ebay, they are on there for  29.99 for the pair. Not a bad deal for me I can pick them up and save the freight.

I have found that the flowmasters have a nice low grumble at idle, but when you hit it hard they are really loud especially with a big block or a car with horsepower. I do like the turbos for price and all around sound.

When I built my '33, I made a split set of headers for it. The front 3 cylinders went to the right side of the car and the back 3 on the left.
Put Cherry Bombs on it and could almost break windows at medium RPM.
Put Hookers on and they were much nicer.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I went with a cheap, what I think is, knock-off version of a turbo from Jegs. I got the pair for under $60.00. I'll give it a try, if it works, great! If not, it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

i dont like loud either
i at first went with 26" thrush glasspacks.
and after a club meeting once
two guys walked up to me in my car.
and didnt realize it was running.

OK, so this past week I put the exhaust on, all but the tailpipes. I fitted and cut and tacked everything in place. It's a little louder than I would like, but I am betting once I finish it off (weld everything up, put in some collector gaskets, add the crossover and tailpipes, not to mention the interior) it will mellow it down a bit. The big thing is, I was able to drive it down the block and back.......WHAT A RUSH!!!!! Now I have to get some tags and insurance!! My son took some video I will try and post.

Congrats on the first ride. It's always a good feeling to actually drive it instead of dreaming about it.
