31 roof insert
« on: December 02, 2012, 03:32:00 AM »
I used a 65 olds 4 door F-85 roof skin for my 31 Chevy. It laid on there so nice you would of swore it was meant to be there!
I would assume there are alot of mid 60's GM 4 door cars that would of worked too.

That's a combination I hadn't heard about.  One of my buddies uses Ford Maverick roofs to stich in.
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

I'll tell you this, I didn't have alot of choices for a roof. I had a buddy who had some old cars out at his place. I wanted some "good" metal for the roof of my hot rod. I also wanted it to slope or curve the way a roof should. Well he had lots of cars to choose from but I couldn't cut up the 2 doors of course. I found several 64 to 68 Olds that were 4 door cars. I brought my generator and cut off wheel and cut the roof out of the 65 Olds F-85 because it was easy to get at and it looked like it was in the worst shape. I would have never guessed that it would lay on the roof of my 31 Chevy so nice. Here's a picture right after it was cut down to size. It is just laying on the roof.

Ver nice. I used an 80s mid size chevy roof on my 32 and it layed down perfect. The metal thickness seemed to be a little thinner, but nothing so bad that caused a problem.

I used one off of a 2000 Monte Carlo. It was a mistake. My measurements were a little off and I had to work the metal way too much to fit it in. And, I am ashamed to say, I used a little more bondo than I would have liked. I forced myself to use it because I paid for it. In retrospect maybe I should have just taken the loss and started over. That being said, the end result did turn out nice .
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

I used a 1957 Chevy roof that was free for the taking. Worked great.

Thought I mentioned it before..but used a (free) insert from a 54 Chevy 2dr sedan.  The metal interior roof bow with interior light even fit my 33 Chevy.
