I'm a pretty frugal Connecticut Yankee when it comes to most things but when it comes to the trade off of gas mileage or performance I'll go with performance every time. I'll do things like installing an OD transmission which could help with mileage but the real reason was that I liked the gear ratios and that was the deciding factor. How much does fuel economy enter into your thought process for a build or is it not even a consideration?

I plan to drive mine a lot so gas mileage did come into play when deciding what drive train to use.  I went with a 283, 700R4 and a 10 bolt with 3:43 gears (all Chevy!).  I do want some performance but I don't have to fry the tires off of it.  The 283 is pretty much stock "right now" but plans are for a little larger cam and some better heads so it can breath.  My days of tunnel rams and 2 fours are done for now.

It doesn't matter to me when I am doing a car that I don't plan on driving every day. The '32 I have been working on has a 350/350 with a mild cam and the rear is a '57 Chevy with 4.56:1 gears. I don't plan on changing anything. Of course, I don't plan on doing too much highway driving

I seriously considered MPG.. running a mild 350, TPI, 700R4 and 3:08 gears and tall tires.  Figure a car under 2500lbs with that tune port torque will have sufficient performance. Feel confident that I'll see 23-25 mpg

I think you should get that kind of mileage with no problem. I have a 350 that I consider to be mild-plus with a Holley 750,700R4, 29.5 inch tires , 3.42 gears and about the same weight and I can get around 17-18 mpg on the highway in OD with the TCC locked. I don't want to talk about around town

I'm hoping for over 20 mpg on the back roads of New England.  I don't think my car will be too heavy so that should be attainable.
