Gloss or satin/matte finish?
« on: January 14, 2013, 08:08:07 PM »
I have always been a fan of a nice shiny paint job but I must admit that some cars look pretty cool with a matte finish. What do you think is the best looking finish on a hot rod or custom and why?

I voted for depends on the car.  I do lean towards a gloss finish which my 33 will have someday.  But it may end up with a satin finish until I can afford the glossy one.  I've seen some cars that look cool in a matte finish but the complete package was intended for that.
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

I kinda like the matte finish, it looks good on some cars, and is single stage.  Suspect that it would be easier to apply for the "do it yourselfer" without a paint booth?

Also..body work can have some minor flaws/and it's cheaper!  Like Tom mentioned...until you can afford the shinny two/three stage paint job.

I voted for depends on the car.  I have painted several cars and trucks, all were gloss, except two that were matte.  Both of these cars were built knowing they would have a matte finish.  Its all up to the owner, or builder, in what they want.  my 2cents...Jim

I'm gonna drive mine (if I ever get it on the street ;D) flat for the first six months or so. Then if all my bodywork and welds hold good its gloss, gloss, gloss!
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

Most of my vehicles even from the start of this hobby have been primered. If I drive a shiny painted vehicle now most of my friends wouldn't believe it. I do like the satin finish if done right.

Don't laugh, Ed, I'm serious! This is my first attempt at building a car (and my first attempt at  welding). I would be a liar if I said I wasn't a little apprehensive about turning this thing loose on the street. :-\
