Are you going to remove the wood, or just bracing it from the inside?

Rattiac

Removing the wood.  I'm out of camping firewood anyway.  😉🔥

Rattiac

Bought a stick of 1.5" square.  Gonna start tearing the car apart once test n', tune is over with.

Hope that works out okay for you. I thoguht my Buick had too much shape in the pillars for using
pipe. I should have anyway, I put way too much work into making the pillars out of plate.

Down to my very last wire and finally filled in the last hole on the dash.  Lower right.
The last wire is the radio power wire, always hot.  I don't like that.
So the Lower right is a pull knob to arm the radio and dome light.
Knobs left to right goes.  Headlights,  choke,  cigarette lighter/usb,  radio/dome arm, heater.
All the basics.

Good job on the electricals. Everything works, simple and elegant.
I have to admit I had a couple gauges not connected on my Essex. In all honesty, I've never made a
car entirely done.
Good idea to make the arm switch for the radio and dome light.  I had a knob on the dash to pull to
switch the dome light on, and liked it so much that I am planning on doing the same this time. Simple
and useful.  And I like it when the dome light doesn't turn on when I open the door in the dark.

That looks real good. What are you going to do on the passenger side of the dash?
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

Looks great. It is always good to finish something.

very nice, check that one off the list

Before tearing into the wood I want to make sure the car is level. Looking at my car from the rear it's leaning to the left a bit.
It looks like that front axle is to blame.  The alignment shop bent it in the wrong spot and it looks like a "W" on the driver's side.  This has annoyed me for awhile.  Drives straight but after talking with Sid,  that "spookyness" at 65 is probably from Ackerman and scrub angles being off.
While I have good Ackerman while turning (toe out) , inside tire turns sharper.  The measurements are off.
My tierods are too far out.  Looks like I have options with different steering arms.
Scrub radius is not far off and can't do anything about that with the current spindles and I'm not running deep dish wheels  .
So that front axle has to go.  Not much options out there with a 50.5" kingpin to KP measurement but OER makes a reproduction 54 chevy axle that may work.  Was hoping to find something I could set my own caster.
Once that is done I'm gonna try adding shims to the body to see if I can get the door's to line up better.  Then I can start killing the wood.

Rattiac

Sammons,  I saw your post about the door pins.  Good tips.
Been in and out the past few weeks.

Rattiac

Picked up the 54 axle today.  I've been driving sooo much every weekend,  burned out.  Need to start wrenching. Hope this works.

That drum looks like the ones for Huck brakes used from '36-'50. They are not as good as the Bendiix brakes if you plan to use drum brakes. All the axle/spindle and spring parts are the same. If the backing plate has 2 slots for adjusting the shoes they are Huck brakes.

I think those are it.  2 holes above the spindle..
Well someone sure got thier money out of those brakes.  Drum was  real thin and broke while removing the driver's side.
Are these something that somebody wants or should I just "Huck em" ? 😉
Gonna keep the spindles just incase mine don't work.

sixball

If those drums are shot they are tool stand bases or yard art. The hubs may be useful. There are tapered roller bearing conversion kits available. They are a good idea for modern highway speeds & heavier cars. The stock caged rollers don't have a much bearing surface. Sid's website has a lot of information about Chevy axles, spindles, king pins, etc.
