Ed, i just use good quality industrial bits. Tried many different types of Spot weld cutter bits thru the years, (like a mini hole saw), expensive, takes forever and never got much milage out of them either. Just a good eye to stop before going thru both layers😁

Yep, thats the cutter i was reffering to. He is spot on about the walk about to. Pilot hole cures that, but they still seem to break teeth if you get calked around or hard spot and get dull quick. Turns it into a two step opperation taking more time.  I just drill once with 1/4" or 3/8" bit, to match spot weld size.
