My buddy is restoring a 1962 Cadillac El Dorado Biarritz convertible and needs the dash pad redone, the original is cracked.
Any ideas for a replacement or possibly covering it ourselves? The material on it looks like leather but is very brittle vinyl.
Personally I feel this is a job for the experts since the foam most likely needs to be replaced and to properly stretch the material a vacuum tank is needed?
Any suggestions?

Getting the dash out was one big feat so covering it should be easy! Any material used for the dash will eventually dry out and crack because of the hostile setting. Several different ways to go. If it's not a restoration then a fiberglass cover could be made and painted. That will last the longest. If he's looking for a vinyl covering do some research on the best for sun (such as Marine grade). Cover the dash with closed cell foam (Landau top). Here is where a GOOD glue is necessary. The Landau top stuff works the best but you must buy it by the gallon. Last is to take the QUALITY vinyl and work/glue/heat as you go and it will (should) cover the dash just fine. Again, research is your friend.
