Title: V8 driveline height in a late 30's Chevy
Post by: EDNY on August 24, 2014, 10:33:48 AM
Lowering the motor mounts in my son's 37 Chevy sedan...any of you guys install a SBC/auto in one of the late 30's cars and not need to raise the "hump" height inside the car? Looks like plenty of ground clearance potential, the guy that didn't finish installing the SBC in the car had the tranny tight up against the floor.  Just curious....

A good friend had a 36 chevy coupe and the motor set so low in his he could have put a very tall tunnel ram. He did not need to mess with the floorboard at all and the ground clearance was fine. It did look a little funny with the engine sitting down so low in the bay.

I'm real confident that I can lower it about an inch or two max and still have plenty of ground clearance.  It just looked too high...  On my 33 Chevy there was no floor to begin with, my first mock-up had 700R4 oil pan ground clearance at about 4".  Didn't feel comfortable and raised the motor 1.25" and after setting pinion angle now have 7" clearance...double the scrub line.

Thinking that the original 6 cyl steel bellhousing must have been around the same height or close to a 700R4 in height?
