SBC measurements
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:27:46 PM »

Does anyone have a SBC sitting around with ram horn manifolds on it that they could measure for me? I need the overall width and the length from the bellhouseing mounting surface to the pully mounting hub on the water pump.
Also,is there such a thing as a "long" and "short" waterpump for a BBC and if so what is the length difference?

Just gave my old vette a quick measure.
From bellhousing to water pump hub (short) 28"
From left to right at widest point (exh. Dump) 25"

These are approx as I'm eyeballing the tape by myself.

Sort & long avail. Sbc but don't recall length diff. I believe the diff was distance away from timming cover. I've used both depending on pully set up used.

Thanks sammons.Good info Moose, now if you had that for a big block I;d be all set! I'm just trying to get a rough idea how far the rad & shell has to be moved ahead, and if the bbc will go in between the frame rails w/o haveing to clip it to get more width.

I did need sbc measurements. The car had a sbc in it since 1960, but I took it out around 1970 and dont have any sbc's any more.I am going bbc for the 50 th anniversary rebuild this year and needed to know how much room I had around the sbc so I can plan for the bbc.Ive got a few bbc's and it looks like the determineing factor will be the exhaust manifold choice.Moveing the rad and shell ahead is no biggie but the width may be.If it is,I have a 56 chev 1/2 ton frame that I will clip on the front of the 28.I know everything will fit in that.I would like to get rid of the independent front as well and the truck frame will fix that too,its just that at 70 yrs old I want to do this as easily as possible. I could just bolt a sbc back in there and drive it away but then it would be like everybody else and that doesnt work for me either!

Ok, got her figured out now. I was half way through my first post w/mesurements when a friend came in with a model T grill shell.   I could blame it on my small screen, but will just have to chalk it up to distractions. ..... I ment to say model A w/454!
Long day. Dare to be different for sure.

I'd like to see pics of a 454 in a mod A,especially the exhaust and mounts. The engine bay in those is even smaller than my 28 chev. And then there is the steering.............

Well I'll get a few pics for ya. Don't be too disappointed though. The kid traded for it over the internet,  it turned out to be a rat rod. He's been trying to fix the unsafe parts first and is turning it back to a Hot Rod that it was supposed to be. Lol.
