Quick fuel carb question
« on: March 29, 2014, 11:59:08 PM »
Trying to help my freind Lonnie diagnose his carb over the phone. It's on a healthy 327 in his '55, carb is Quick Fuel 4v, vacuum secondary, 650 cfm, dual feed. It's dialed in perfect, no problems there untill he shuts it off. Won't start untill you pump the crap out of it. I had him take it out, run the crap out of it, and if every thing else was fine (bottom end, midrange, high rpm, idel at stop light) take it home and pop the air cleaner off and check for the vapor smoke (flooding). He did, all was fine, and no flooding. Also had him check the accelerator pump, squirting fine. 11.5-12.5 voltage to H.E.I.while cranking.

I might add everthing is new ( including new distributor assy complete.) He has changed out the manual fuel pump, added a new electric fuel pump at the tank, has a fuel pressure reg also. If the engine is cold, starts right off. Also starts fine after sitting for an hour or so.

Any idea's?         Thanks

My first thought would be that the fuel is draining from the carb back into the tank.  Did the problem start with a new carb, new fuel filter or new fuel pump?  fuel filter backwards etc

the problem started a couple months ago, and that was our first thoughts. Thus the new manual fuel pump, thought it was draining back through that. Then we put on the electric pump thinking he could pump up before starting. Funny thing, the secondary fuel filter is a see through and shows fuel there.

The carb has been on a while, and other than that it's been flawless.we put the new Wysco 60,000 v distributor assy in thinking may be the old HEI was week or worn. He also ran a heavier feed wire to it, eleminating any chance of voltage drop.

This carb is similar to a Holley, and the only thing we haven't changed or looked at is the power valve. If memory serves me, that's a different problem?

This one has me stumped, I'm out of ideas and he's about out of patience.
Edit: also ran a new fuel line (complete 3/8") just incase of a pin hole, or sucking air.

I had a problem similar to what your having and it turned out to be a problem with the carburetor apparently getting hot enough to cause vapor to form in the fuel passages and not being able to flow through the jets. I could see fuel flowing from the accelerator pump circuit so I knew the bowels had fuel. I finally installed an Edelbrock 1" phenolic spacer to insulate the card from heat soak and the problem was solved. Might be worth a look.

Well that's simple enough, never would have thought of that! Makes perfect sense as he doesn't get the car out when it's cold out. Excellent,  I'll give him a call right now.

Thanks
