Brakes  (8-17-2011)

I mocked up my master cylinder , checked pedal travel , and so on.

 Mount all welded up .

( I used a rod from the mechanical brake system as a support since it was thick and strong )
I was out of flat stuff anyway.

Master cylinder and combo valve bolted up , ran all the brake lines , welded up a M/C push-rod also.

Top view .

Spec's :
73 camaro (manual) master cylinder and rotors/calipers , 85 camaro combo valve .
I didnt put any residual valves in cuz im not lowered and the combo valve helps in slippery conditions . (google it)
I plan on running this car cross country . I guess we will see if there's any hicc-ups , but it should work.

I wished I could of lowered the pedal back an inch or so ( to give better steering wheel to leg room )
but it took the whole 1 - 1/2 inch of travel the pedal had , with a tad of freeplay (1/16')

.

Well after figuring out that the rod-shop screwed up and ordered the wrong brackets
Speedway swaped em' out no problem (even after I had them for 2 yrs ).
So now with all the correct parts , I have the 11" intermediate GM kit for thier fordged 54 spindles.
The car originally had the tie-rod bar behind the axle but it interfered with the the calipers so I moved it to the front wich helped cuz now the steering stop now touches like it susposed to do .
You can see how I ran the brakeline also .

 Brake lines installed.
( I routed the hard-line this way so they wouldnt get burned up when I weld in the
 motor-mount crossmember)
The rubber-line mount welded up just below the shock resivour . Plenty of travel and no rubbing form the draglink.
rear brake-line to the 8.8 ford axle.

Brakes done ............... (11-1-2011)
but chasing a few leaks .
I ended up changing some adapters on the m/c  , and then putting (alum) washers on BOTH sides of the brake-hose .(ditched the copper washers)  That cured the leaks. Bought some speed-bleeders for the rear.
Still gotta bleed the fronts when I get an extra hand , but for now I cracked the fronts open and left em' for the night. Works for now and theres good pressure in the pedal .
Might push it out of the garage and give it a very low speed test.
 (again another helping hand )

When I ordered the calipers in I got a few things I needed just to get it running .
A 15" mechanical Fan and a floor shifter.
I odered this from Jegs : universal floor shifter ( $ 37) used for columm to floor coversions.
its 14 1/2 " tall and the mech junk is under the floor. Just a basic shifter .

Windows.
Since there was downtime between shipping I had some tinted Lexan we found in the garage when we moved in .
There was a full sheet of dark tint (20%) that I used for the rear 3 windows and some already cut up sheets with lighter tint (35%) that were used for the doors , they were about 2 inches short but who cares they were free .

I finally got the fronts bled with help from my son . Then we pushed the car out and tested the brakes .It snowed that morning (1/2") . Good ,that's some real world testing .

The IROC proportioning valve did its job with no rear-brake lock-up on slippery surfaces .
It all works great.

I spent the day cleaning shop and then got ready for the next phase :
The MOTOR / TRANS install .

Great progress! I like that your using the stock pedal.

How does the shifter mount?

Speedway gets some flack on the HAMB for being the Walmart of parts, but I have had nothing but good experiences with them. 1 shackle quality problem that I returned. No problem.

Again they have The best automotive museum in the world. If your going cross country on I 80 check their web site to see when it's open and plan on going.

Rattiac, you are really busting out on this. It's fun to watch.
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

The motor /trans coming out of the Chevette . A while after this I sold the chevette with the V-6 kit and 8" rear. Wasn't intending to,  but the guy really wanted it. Figured it was one less project to have sitting around.

Engine / Trans install
Used a v-6 crossmember motor mount from speedway. Arc welded that in  .

Since this 231 had only 12,000 miles on it (since I rebuilt it) and it was a Pontiac block it seemed like fate.
I tried using the stock exhaust manifolds but they hit the steering box and passenger frame-rail , So I found these Heddman Hedders from summit for a late 70's camaro . Fits much better.

Now I gotta get the radiator in the shell and get the hood on.
Ended up ditching that crappy bun filter .

I got the radiator in to the shell. Who knew a model A radiator would fit so well in a GM grill.

Put the hood , headlights back on . Its been sooooooo  long .

The headers did touch on the drivers side but the hood was pushed in a bit , So I pushed it back out and the only thing that touches is the latch when I unlock it to open it .

Gotta love those gills

I fabbed up an under the floor battery-box , gonna finish it up. I had Maaco quote me to pull the dent out of the gas-tank , they wanted $ 170. Yeah right. I could buy the tool for $ 99 at harbor freight and pull the dent myself . The radiator shop quoted $175 to clean and seal it .
 HAa . Speedway $ 70 .

Battery box is in. (4-22-2012)

I wasnt able to find any original taillight(s) but it looked real close to these
Model A taillights (LED) only they are a bit smaller. Close enuf.

Made a small mount for the right taillight.
