Test drive complete and very happy with the new rear leafspring's. 😎
Sits up a bit higher in the back now. 👍
The only thing I need now is some modern shocks back there.

Looks good!
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

Im glad it's not sagging on that side anymore.
Seems to handle better and stay straight in the lane.

3rd brake light is wired up and looking great.
I thought about going to a 2" LED but I think this is subtle.

Starting to tear out the rear floor right now.

Looking good! You're not wasting any time.
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

Thanks Chopper.

New parts are in. 8)
Monroe air shocks for a 1980 Chevy Malibu and the parallel air line kit from summit racing
Rear upper shock bar for 35-40 Ford
Lower shock mounts adjustable , both from speedway.

The bar is a 43" width and the frame
is near 40-1/2" wide.

Goodbye old "ride control" system.
These were toast. One side worked only on rebound and the other worked only on compression even with new oil.  :o

Since I have the rear floor out, I think im going to "re-do" the sub-framing while im in there along with more reinforcement to the seat mounts.
Wasn't happy with that. :-[

Looks more like "ride out of control"! You are going to love those new shocks!

Just think of the car as a "continuous work in progress", they are never done.  Always bugs to peel off, oil to change and the occasional wash and wax ,  even if just in primer.

Was able to get the shock bar in easily. The frame gets wider in the rear.
Now the exhaust, brake and gas needs to be moved.

Measurements.
20.5" -- extended
12.75" -- collapsed
7.75" -- travel

Axle has 5.75" uptravel before bumpstops.
The bar is mounted as high as I can get it in the frame.

With the lower mount at it's lowest position I'll have 4" downtravel left on the shock at ride height.
I may have to add a 1" bumpstop.

Also I need to space out the shock on the lower mount.
It's a bit close.

I accidentally kinked the fuel line trying to get it out of the way and started leaking gas. 😠
So it'll be a week or so before I can do any welding.

It's been a few months. All aired out now.
So after trying different things and measuring over and over.
Today, with 2 fire extinguishers near me, I made some tack welds on the upper shock bar.
Used some 6011 to reduce the sparks. Seems to help.
I need to throw a few practice vertical welds before I burn it in permanently. It's been awhile.

Just a thought.  I mounted my cross member behind the differential so the top of the diff wouldn't hit it depending on suspension travel and for more exhaust clearance.
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!
