Hatch rebuild part 2;

This upper section needs to be replaced because screw holes.

The lower section below the hatch needs replaced as well. Also removing the 1/4" wood so the hatch is flush. Gonna put new aluminum all the way down to the bottom of the frame .

I cut 3/8" from the wall to make the hatch flush.

Hatch is skinned with 1/8" birch plywood.  Grain going sideways make the wood bend easier .

The new Hurricane hinge mounted up for mock-up. Most builders let the hinge overhange the body by about 3/8" to create a drip edge away from the body. Im gonna do 1" . Its overkill but oh well.

Up and down travel works good . I have a pair of old rear hatch shocks from a cherokee that should work perfect for this .

Now im just waiting on aluminunm and trim .  ::)

interesting that the hinge your using, that your calling a HURRICANE HINGE, is the same type design as a 1933---1935 Chevrolet hood hinge minus the rivet holes.

Where did you obtain that and is it made of aluminum ????

  Mike  I got mine at an auto recycler .It was off of a cap on the back of some old Dodge truck with a camper in the box, But i do believe that any outdoor trailer place carry these,They are used to attach tables to the sides of trailers and motorhomes.They also use a very similar piece to attach awnings to the sides of trailers and yes they are made of aluminum,
  As far as letting it stick out beyond the edge of the trailer. That is looking for trouble or an awfully sore head--OUCH  vette59jdwl

   Rattiac  under the end of the kitchen trunk lid is suppose to be a rubber to seal the lid with the edge of the sides therefore diverting water or any rain out away from the seal and prevent moisture from entering the living area. vette59jdwl

Yea. I havent got to that point yet. Still waiting on trim/aluminum.
When I get there I'll pull the a/c and stick my head in there when the hatch is closed to see where I need to seal it better . Hopefully i'll have parts in a week or two . Its winter but I wanna go camping.

Love the Native American. :o  I'm looking for just the right flying lady for my roadster.
