1935 Chevy standard 2 door leave as is or restore.
« on: December 09, 2013, 12:03:36 AM »
OK, I traded into this original sedan, I am thinking about fixing a couple things and driveing it as is. I do need some help, I need 1934-35 standard hood sides, rear fenders and rear seat. The batt is 6volt and it is single digit dagrees here and the motor wont turn over very fast can I jump with 12 volts. I am excited to see it run.

Cool car! Gangster style.

I enjoy working on stuff but I like driving them better.

My vote is to get it driving.

I know what your talking about with the cold. I have this week off and it's too cold to work in the shop.

I was in the same situation with my 6-volt 1952 McCormick tractor.  Just installed a 12v coil, resistor,  alternator and 12v bulbs - worked for years.  Goods news is that you have 360 degress of patina!

In the 6V system wire sizes have to be bigger than in a 12V system. If the battery cables have been replaced with new ones they may be too small. Everything has to be clean with solid connections. Make sure the starter is not filled with dirt and grease. That being said the starter will work fine on 12V as long as you don't run it for too long at a time. I've run lots of 6V ford and GM starters on 8 and 12 volts and have never burned one up. Other things won't like 12 volts.

I would get it running and drive it for awhile even with the ripped fenders and patina. You will be suprised at the attention that car will bring. Then restore it later after having some fun with it.

The guy I bought it from said he drove it as is for 3 years. I put the 6volt charger on it and with a shot of eather she came to life. He gave me a pair of better front fenders, but I might hammer on these and run as is .

Very cool ride.  Since you got it running I'd drive it like it is and do some work as time goes on.  Like Ghost said I'm sure you'll get lots of attention with it.

It has been my experience that an "under construction" car generates a much friendlier response than a "finished" car. I think it is because more people can relate to the process than to the finished product and want to help. There is always mystery and hope in a project. Once it is done it becomes a statement that some will disagree with and feel the need to tell you where you went wrong. When it has shiny paint they feel the need to pick it apart. I guess it's a lot like sex. ;D

Very nice car. Good luck and drive on!
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn
