Pony express & Big Boy
« on: June 17, 2024, 08:11:45 PM »
Saw today on the news that they are doing the Pony Express Re-ride  and riding through Utah .
You can track em GPS on the NPEA (national pony express association) .
So many cool things going on this summer.

One day I'd like to have a cruise to the Orr's Ranch on Lincoln hwy.
Seemed like it should get some attention.

Edit:::;  looks like this Sunday they will be coming through Utah.
Might be a good test drive for the truck with the new radiator/pump.
See if I can get some footage.

July 4th.  The Big Boy 4014 is also coming through on the way to California.  Its coming back around the 16- 18th on a different track, the Lucin cutoff across the great salt lake.

Gonna be busy. 😊

They do the re-ride every year and if you don't make an effort you'll miss it. The Pony Express came right through here Fort Churchill through Dayton to Carson City. One of the most famous events was an 8 hour 200 mile ride by the rider that rode this section Pony Bob Haslam.

Seeing the Big Boy 4014 out on the desert in Nevada going either way would be great! Is many good spots.

Cool. Best not blink twice, they will be moving right along.

Kansas only had 13 pony express stations, all in the north east corner between Mo river and Nebraska. We had a lot of stage coach routes/stations and army redouts/posts around here, but thats all.

My son are planning to hake his boys somewhere way out between here and Lovelock when the Big Boy is making the return trip. Hope they'll have it rollin' out there.

I missed the pony express re-ride.  Got a call that morning that my grandpa passed away.  Spent the day with family.  He was a greaser  even till this day.  Made it to 90. Had a good life and brought up a great family.
Funeral is Thursday morning,  then I'll go into work for a few hours and then head out to the saltflats.
Putting the rest of the truck together tonight after the radiator/water pump swap.  Kinda busy week but I committed to this, can't let em down.

Oh Sixball... here's a good YT channel that's going over the route for BigBoy.  Might help ya locate it.

I was planning on chasing bigboy in my truck and camping in the desert for Saturday night and then..... someone suggested I chase it in the 32.  😳🤔 Hmm.
That would be an epic picture.  😎
I probably shouldn't cause of the wood inside but I know the drive train can handle it.
Gonna look at a new shorter route,  I'll get out early and find a spot to park that hopefully the "chasers" haven't taken over.  Going to be a hot hot day. Might not get this chance again.

Hope you get some pic's.
That schedule is what threw me off. In Salt Lake It never said what time it was leaving.  Schedule says 4pmish,  left at 10am.

I didn't miss this! On my way home from Carson City I drove by it and a couple of hours later we watched them tow it past the bar headed to the Silver Springs airport about 20 miles down Highway. Lots of cope & county trucks. Both Carson City & Dayton airports were closer. For Carson there too much in the way from the road. Dayton airport was only about a mile away but it wouldn't fit the narrow streets and a two lane bridge over the Carson River blocked the way.

Sorry you missed it Rattiac, seems they are always changing the departure times. That would have made a hell of a cool pic with the 32.  It's suppose to come near here, (Wichita Ks) during the heartland tour in August. Heading south to Dallas Tx and maybe Huston?

Sixball, watching one go down the street gets attention. 35-40 years ago the our car wash lost the south block wall blown down in a storm. Right after that was cleaned up i seen a Cessna heading down Center street early in the morn when i was on my way to work. Local took advantage of the extra room and pulled in to wash his plane. Somebody got a hold of our local news paper so she made it down there for pics and interview😁

We went to Gerlach and saw the train. I got some pictures and will post them if I can get them off of my phone. Not tonight I'm beat!
