Bought my 1966 Nova back 44 years later
« on: March 21, 2023, 07:44:29 AM »
When I was in the Border Patrol (1976) I bought a 1966 2dr hardtop Nova with 6 cyl auto in El Paso, Texas.  I was transferred to the Canadian border (NY) and brought the Nova with me, put in a small block and painted it. Around 1979 I was being transferred again and sold the car.

About 15 years ago my son spotted the car sitting in a guys yard and tried to buy it but he wouldn't sell it.  My son always liked that car. Over the the years I became friends with the guy through a local car club after I returned to the area.  Told him I wanted first dibs if he ever wanted to sell it. The car went through 3 owners that I know of.

In that 15 years he took the car completely apart, blasted the body, sealed it, put in new floor etc and it sat on horses in his garage. The NY roads took a toll on the panels.

This week he finally threw in the towel and sold me the car (many piece project).  It's still on horses, i'm making a body trolley to get it back home!

Looks like I have a father, son, grandson project that will now stay in the family. Will be looking for 66 Nova parts if you have any!

That is cool! What a great project. I hope you let us follow along. I wish I had son & grandson interest in some of my projects.  :(

That's awesome Ed.  I've had a couple 66 Chevy Novas and always loved them.  This was the last one I owned and sold about 20 years ago.
I hope you'll post some pics of the rebuild!
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

Ed, thats great! Always liked those 66-67's. I've had a couple cars come back to me, only to sell them again. Wish my '57 would find it's way home again.

My first car was a 1957 Chevy 210 2dr hard top, lived in the city (rental) with no storage space,  Army called, so I sold it. That is another car I wish I had, but this 66 Nova brings back memories for my children.

I'm in the process of ordering a bolt on front suspension for the Nova so I can get it rolling.

That color is almost the color I painted my Nova with.  Disappointed that the 66 Nova is in boxes...but like the idea of putting it back together with modern parts including an IFS, discs brakes, EFI etc.  Was surprised that it has a 8.5" rear axle (factory).  One of my son's has his 67 Firebird stored in my barn and it has a 7.5" rear end.

That is a great story Ed. Good for you, it's going to bring a lot of pleasure...again.
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

That's a cool car and good way to keep a few generations connected.

Hope you keep us updated, it will be a nice project!
