Experimenting with Patina
« on: September 23, 2022, 08:43:13 PM »
Been experimenting with Patina but wasn't going for the painted stuff. I wanted the real thing,,,, Rust.

Patina takes time,  like decades. 😉
  Im not that patient.
Found a vid where a guy rusted up his Honda civic tuner car using freshly sanded metal and a spray bottle.  His formula was,,, 1 part hydrogen peroxide + 1 part vinegar and tablespoon of salt.

I sanded the hood to bring out the V in the hood and  got just a tiny bit of metal showing.
The spray method works but it still shows bare metal even after a few weeks and the rust will wash off easily.
At work when we clean a stubborn stain on a seat,  we'll spray the cleaner and lay a thin plastic over it.
So I tried that.  Plastic pulled off the rust.

Rag method.
Trying again I used a red shop rag. Sprayed it on the rag and let it sit on the hood overnight.
This had great results and the rust was a dark brown.  Also didnt wash off with a light spray from the power washer.

Figured if I didn't like it I could always paint the hood. Clearcoat was gone anyways. 😁

Hard to believe that rust is only 2 days old.

Coat everything you don't want rusted and go back to Bonneville. Patina experiments with me.  ::)

Over the winter the rust really set in.  Looks good.
Now I would like to seal it up  .
Been thinking about using a clearcoat but... would like to roll it on.  Any brands you recommend or types ?
Could use a schooling,  im not familiar with enamel vs. Polyurethane vs. Ect.
Not looking for a show finish just a work truck but would like to prevent the rest of the clear from coming off.

Vice Grip Garage sells a coating that can be applied by hand or spray gun, I haven't used it just seen him apply it to a couple of his vehicles,

Patina, that's a nice word for it.  ;D My '53 has been sitting out since I got it in '75. It has "patiaed" through 3 pain jobs!  ::)
