41-46 Chevy truck parts wanted.
« on: October 14, 2020, 01:35:23 PM »
I just bought a 41-46 Chevy truck, (not sure of the year exactly) for the sole purpose of yard art. I have always loved the look of an old abandoned car or truck in the woods, or out in a field, or next to a barn,...that has been there for as long as anyone could remember. One that is beyond repair, and not a restoration candidate, but something that has become part of the scenery, become part of nature if you will.

Well, I have such a piece. It's a cab mated to a late 70s chassis and engine, that was abandoned some time ago. Someone had the bright idea to try to turn it into a camper, so they cut off 90% of the rear cab panels, and roof. To look at it from the front, you might never even know it's been hacked up. I'm just looking to close it up some and along with looking for a rear cab and roof panel,..I also need a door glass. It's the passenger side but I believe they are interchangeable. I know I can get the glass new, but it wouldn't come with the frame around it. The door has no guts in it, so I'll be just permanently putting it in the up position, and even a cracked glass would be fine. There's no floor either, but I'll probably put in a sheet of plywood if I decide to do anything with that.  I'll post a few pics soon.

What a shame destroying the cab.  From experience I think locating a cab would be easier than trying to locate the fenders, doors, grille etc.  I do see those cabs listed occasionally stripped out .,.... a reason I don't give them a second look because doors etc. are always gone.

As far as the window...a simple "manual" up down track could be fab'd.   I put the up/down track from a Saturn rear door in my 33.

Here is an example of what I mean...does the cab looks like GM?  Ironic is the rear section is also cut out.

Hey Ed, how's it going buddy? Yes, I have seen quite a few cabs for sale, but like I mentioned, this one is 99% most likely just going to remain yard art. Got a really nice patina'd rusty old 1938-1947 Gilbarco gas pump going up right near it this week end to complete the look of that area of my property. That's why I'm just looking for perhaps a cheap rear panel and roof to tack back onto it, just to keep the snow and rain out,..(not that the elements haven't been going inside it now for who knows how long). Same thing with the window. I'm not interested in making it operational, I'd settle for just keeping it in the up position permanently. I only paid $500 bucks for this cab and chassis, and had it flat bedded to my house, (I found it right in my town via Craigslist) for $50.

I paid more for the gas pump,...lol.

Good luck Frank, might be hard to find just the back panel. That 48 that Ed linked, well it might be easier, cheaper and better in the long run just to swap out cabs. You know if I tried something like this at my house I would have to add a bed because my wife would kick me out of the house :o ;D
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

I live in a rural town, lots of woods, and farmland, lakes for fishing, etc,.... and there's often an old farm tractor or truck seen sitting in a field or near a barn,....and people's property often have an old car or truck on it. My property is clean as a whistle, and it's a new construction home built in early 2019 so,.....it definitely doesn't look like a salvage yard. More like a rustic, vintage scene on the side now that I finished my old gas pump too.

I did find a door window "with" the frame on Ebay this week,.....very surprised too because all I ever see is brand new glass. It's on it's way,....now still looking for the roof and rear panel.

Vehicle yard art isn't rare around here...if I remember I'll start taking some pictures. One guy has two old pickups on landscaped  plots.  Puts hay and pumpkins in the beds this time of year for display.

I only have 2.5 wooded acres,...but my daughter and fiancé just bought the house and property that abuts mine right behind me with 58 acres. I joke with them and say my property just became 60.5 acres.
