If the U joint is the same the shop you got it from should be able to send you the piece you need. If they knew there are two different ones they should have asked which one you needed. If you want a new one like you have any auto parts store can get one. You may have to convince the counter person that they can get it. Is the clean band on the old one as far as it went into the tranny? I can see why you wanted it in there a little more.   :)

You are right on all counts, Sixball. The shop said they didn't know there are two sizes and they only carry the size they sent me, their only option is to return it. I can buy a new one easy enough, but they're about $70. So my choices are: $70. for new yoke, $70. to return the drive shaft (and then buy another somewhere) or use my existing yoke? I think my best option is to use the existing yoke. Which as you pointed out goes in as far as that clean band, this new drive shaft will push it in about another inch, I think that will be ok.

I think that is the best choice as long as the seal area is good. It will ease your mind for sure. I once had a drive shaft turn into a sort of pole vault/pogo stick under a '40 Chevy pickup. It exited through the wood in the bed. I'm glad no one was behind me but sadly most people I raced were not behind me.  ;D

Thanks Sixball. I hit the yoke on the wire wheel last night and the area where the seal will contact it is nice and smooth. Also, when I cleaned the yoke, it looks like it is made of bronze or brass. Anyway, I installed the yoke on the driveshaft and it fit great, it put the yoke about another inch into the tail shaft.
I did start to make a driveshaft loop...….just in case. I had the metal laying around my garage and it's cheap insurance
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

Good deal, I'm glad it's working out. Loops are a good idea. Polish that bronze it will make all that see it smile, great detail.  8)

It will look old soon enough. I've put new wood in my '53 twice and it looks as bad as when I first did it in '75. I have an old parts '52 GMC long bed with the original wood that was painted black and it looks almost new. I also had the metal strips for the '53 bed powder coated they are oxidized and scratched up now too, but it is used as a truck and gets to play hot rod on special days.  :) If I do the bed again I think I'l try the TREX material for outside decks.

Here's the start of my drive shaft loop. I had some 1/4" steel lying around, wish I had an anvil. Trying to get this stuff round, it wears you out!

I'm sure he will protect it from being scratched, because of the amount of time that been put into his truck

Went camping over the weekend. It was back to City of rocks, Idaho .
Had to finish this trip from last year that got cut short.

Friday afternoon we found one of the last spots and it was very windy at the top. Saturday we found a spot down lower and the wind eventually died off. Saw some mysterious clouds that looked "alien like" .  😵
A cool way to end the weekend.
