Dog and possum
« on: January 13, 2019, 11:29:43 AM »
Making dinner last night I heard a dog barking loud and close out back. Thought a stray was after my cat. Opened the back door and hollerd, but nothing out there. Went back in and the barking started again, resonating in the house...WTH? Opened the back door nothing again. Danged Pit Bull had chased a opossum down the 4'x4'x9' deep basement window well.  :o

Long 2hr story short...(she was scared) with the City boys and a crew of many we got her up and out of thru the egress window. No harm to her and nobody got bit.  :) We couldn't figure out ownership so she went to doggy jail for the weekend. Pit Bulls are on the no no list within the city limits.

Thought the possum was dead, nope. But he was mighty pissed off down there this morning ;D  I found a 2"x8"x12' board and slid it down so he could crawl out when ready. Time to make another grate I guess.

Pit bulls get a bad rap mostly because of the people that have misused the breed. Too bad you too often can't tell if someone has already ruined them. Possums have their own issues. The best you can hope for is that they will play dead. :o

Ed, it probably got up and cruised on after your wife left.  :)  They are tough big RATS!  I've seen one tear hell out of a smaller dog.

Sixball, I agree. Hell you can make any dog mean. I tried to coax her out with ham, but she just wouldn't crawl in. Me being a dog person...I reached in to grab her collar and she growled at me. I stepped back and wondered, I was by myself. Not knowing the dog....she could have taken me if so inclined. I'm in no shape to wrestel with a dog.

So I called for help. The City boys called animal control out of Dodge, they said  "just put the catch pole on and drag her up the 9 foot" I
said absolutly not!  She didn't seem aggresive at all, just scared. My preacher friend came over (good with dogs) and got a catch pole and then my leash on her and two of them pulled her up and in. She seemed really sweet once in the house.

I' m just glad she didn't get hurt during the fall or rescue. :)

**Update**  I just went down stairs to check on the possum, he crawled out!  All is good in the neighbor hood. ;D

they made it across the border here a few years ago and we had one hit on our street by a car, one look at those ultra long shape teeth, you will  not be putting your hand anywhere near it.

I guess the dog and owner were reunited, didn't here what the fines were. (Dog off lease- Pit Bull)

Got up to near 50°, so I made a quick grate. Still need some more bracing, but it holds my weight (140) anyway ;D

better add some mesh to the top to keep critters out, your cat can get down there easy

Haha, cats smarter than that ;)  Trying to find some hail screen or at least some hog panel wire to weld on top. In 16-1/2 years, all that has ever fell down in there was trash, snakes and frogs ;D

Put in a frog ladder and call it good. The more you put on it the more light you loose.
