Heater talk. Brrrrrrr
« on: December 26, 2018, 01:23:46 PM »
Let's see/talk your car heaters.
Im gonna order one shortly before I start the metal project since the defrost will require fab work. Probably use the ash tray hole for the defrost vent.

On the '39 build I used an OLD AIR heat/defrost/air unit.  Caught in some bad weather last year coming back from Pueblo the defrost feature sure came in handy.  Never used that feature in any of my other builds but would not skip it again.  Heat and air are nice but ya gotta see to drive.

I installed a Vintage Air Gen II Heater with Defroster #506101 in my 33.  Very happy with it.  It fits under the cowl real well and doesn't interfere with leg room.
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

The stock heater and defroster in my '53 pickup worked fine until the control valve started leaking. Those units are getting expensive and hard to find. I have a kit and a few old ones to practice on. Mt son's '54 Studebaker has an interesting set up with a small round heater core under the passenger set..

I have not hooked up the defroster yet.  Plan is to put some 1/2" spacers were the dash mounts.  This will leave a gap along the top edge where the windshield meets the dash.  I plan to create a piece along the top of that with louvers for the defroster.  Here's some pics of the heater unit.  It's a compact unit and works well.

oh that's compact for sure, about the smallest I have seen.

When you get around to doing the defroster vents, I would be very interested to see how you accomplish that.

My coupe 35 std is very similar to your 33 cabriolet.

I ordered this EBay unit. Found one that didn't use weak computer fans.
Also van floor heaters is another alternative. (3rd pic). Advantage is bolting up to the firewall flat.

I need to find an ash tray for my 32 dashboard now. Anybody know where I can find one ?

Awesome. I'll take it. Let me know how much ?
Any pics of it ?

The heater arrived today. I'll probably try to mount it this weekend once the shop is cleaned.

Rattiac, I like your idea of using the ashtray as a defrost duct. I wouldn't have had that option on my 35, dash is too thin on top.

I used Vintage Air Gen ll heat/def/air unit #981412. I used a pair of long skinny defrost ducts that I had scraped out of something (Chev/Ford/Mopar/Amc?)  I just slotted holes under the garnish molding, and flush mounted them. I'll either just slot garnish or graft on 1950'ish AD truck defrost louvers to the garnish to finish off.

heres what I did, used the flex tubing and attached defrost vent to it.  then used Velcro sticky attached to that to hold it under the dash.

Idea was if I had to use defrosters, reach under dash, pull defrost up to dash and point it at the windshield.  Only ever had to use it once in late fall crisp nite.

Thanks , trying not to alter the dash so this seems like a great option. Maybe reversing the lid to help direct air.

Started mounting the heater today. Had to find some heater hose with a 90°bend.
Measured 9"wide x 8"deep x 4"thick .

Cool!  That's what I was thinking to, and maybe add some defuser blades in there to direct flo L & R.
