Interesting article but some things left out.  Ideal mixture of air to gas (stoichiometric) is 14.7:1, E10 is 14.04:1, E85 is 9.75:1 and as an aside diesel is 14.6:1.  Along with E85 comes the need for a wide band O2 sensor(s) and higher flow injectors.  As you can see the more ethanol added the lower the gas mileage.  Because of the caustic nature of ethanol other parts of the fuel/engine that were not designed for it will suffer.  I guess in today's world we must continue to dilute gas in order to have some in the future.

Gasoline is for engines, alcohol is for drinking, and water is for fighting over. ;D

Also interesting:  Today, the U.S. Department of Energy defines E85 as actually any blend of 51 to 83 percent ethanol with gasoline  thus the need for Flex Fuel Sensor: the Advanced Fuel Dynamics fuel sensor measures the ethanol percentage, calculates a new command based on this percentage and increases the amount of fuel delivered to produce an effective air-fuel ratio  So those ratios aren't constant and with E85 the comparable higher octane ratings increase performance (stealing from economy of course).
