Several years ago my son bought one of the small Harbor Freight combination tools. Drill press, mill and lathe. It is far from a precision machine but it has made a lot of cool hot rod and motorcycle parts. Most recently he used it to help rebuild a much better older lathe. He has filled his shop with bigger and better machine tools but this one and a jewelers lathe got him started.

Know what you mean...I started with and still have a Central Machinery 40" brake, slip, roll...but upgraded with a nice 48" finger brake and recently a PEXTO 37" stomp shear that is great.  I have two drill presses and use one for non-precision milling. I'd like to do more mill work and have been impressed with the quality of the mills like the one in the picture.

My other metal fab collection now includes, oxy-acetylene set, AC/DC 225 stick welder, 140 amp 110V mig, 40amp plasma cutter, 185 Miller Mig and a Miller 180 Syncrowave TIG.  Forgot -also have a Rockwell lathe which comes in handy.

We're off grid so no 220v stuff till I get the big old Miller welder/power plant going. Then I can run the mill. It is amazing what works on our 4KW inverter and generator.

The good news is that the tariff on small bench top mini mills has been lifted...waiting for the prices to drop.

Since I last posted here I replaced the motor on my Jet mill with a 110 volt that someone took off of a new one. It works very well on our system. I spent some time today trying to get a 6' hunk of 90lb railroad rail up on the mill so I can bore two 7/8 holes in it. I burned up a new Harbor Freight cut off saw cutting it to length. They replaced it and I kept cutting for hours! The ball on that stuff is really hard from the pounding it takes from the train wheels. I don't want to try and cut holes in it with a hand drill. I've tried torches in the past with less than satisfactory results. My mill is about a foot higher than is should be. It's scary having something that heavy and awkward so high off the floor. I hauled it in with the tractor but was not able to set it in place. back at it tomorrow.

If I remember correctly...one round from a .308 rifle puts about a 7/8" hole in a rail...the .223 just pocks it up ;)

Now there is a thought! I have a few thousand rounds of 308 and eventually I'll put one close to where I need it. So, Should I take it back out of the shop just incase I run out of ammo before I get close to the sweet spot?  ::)

That'll work, but I'll have to shoot from a rest. Thanks.   8)
