Transmission lock-up
« on: February 17, 2018, 10:11:28 AM »
I thought I remembered seeing a posting on wiring the trans lock-up through the brake switch.  Can someone point me in the right direction?

The one I have in my coupe for a 700 R4 is from ATI trans.  The 700 R4 is from an 1988--1991 trans non electronic.

The kit consists of a plastic square plug for drivers side of trans that has 2 wires coming out of it, one is power , the other runs over top of trans to a switch in the side of trans on pass side, that activates the overdrive lockup.

See if I can find a link to one.

went to ATI website and could not find the lock up kit.  I have one sitting with a load of boxes full of parts for my roadster build.

I bought a tremec t56 magnum 6 speed stick,  so have a bunch of stuff related to doing an automatic 700-R4 I will not be using.

When I find it will post the part number.

Damn, can't get the diagram to upload and when I try it will lock up so that nothing works.  To run the TCC thru the brakes here is what I do.  I use a standard relay with 5 terminals on it (87 and 87a).  Power comes from the fuse block BRAKE circuit and feeds relay terminals 30 and 86.  Terminal 85 goes thru the brake switch and to ground.  Relay terminal 87a goes to the TCC circuit and terminal 87 goes to the brake light wire feeding the steering column.  So, in normal driving the TCC circuit has power but must meet other requirements to actually lock up.  When the brakes are applied the relay flips from power to terminal 87a (TCC) to terminal 87 which directs power to the brake circuit.

Here's one that shows the wiring through the brake switch with a toggle for a manual override if you want to

This is how I have my car wired up, no need for a toggle.  When driving the brake pedal switch is normally closed and 12v is fed to transmission (allows lockup). Step on brake pedal and the same switch opens - cutting the power to the transmission (unlocks).

You will need two switches one for the trans lockup and the other for the brake lights

A  brake switch from a vehicle with cruise control has a set of n/c and n/o contacts that's what I used

Munch, I'm assuming your M/C is under the floor and that switch is out in the weather.  It's billed as weather proof but I found out it really isn't.  Use some RTV to seal around the edges will help.  If you can contact me directly I can send you the lock-up diagram using a relay.
