A friend of mine gave this to me. I never saw one before. Who knows what it is? Obviously it is a flag holder, but where does it go? It looks quite old and the front of the shield shows the faint remnants of the stars and stripes. I think it fits into an exhaust pipe, and during parades the exhaust gas would blow the flags out. The white crinkled ends look like dried out or melted rubber.

Could the (4) legs be extended outward to attach to a front or rear license plate?

Thanks for the reply, Ed. No, they collapse inward easily enough (with springy tension) but there is no way you could pull them apart very far without bending them, an inch maximum.

I've seen some that attach to the center of the front bumper.  Would love to get one for my 33.

How big are the curved ends with the white crinkle rubber on them?: Are big enough to fit around a light bulb like front porch light buib?

It could possibly fit around a light bulb but I don't think that's the application. I am think you cracked the mystery, Ed. I think it would fit into a crank hole.

I'll vote for the crank hole, I did a search on the web for antique car flag displays but didn't find anything that looked like the picture.

I think my guess would be that it goes over the radiator neck and on the radiator cap of an early car - '20s/ very early '30s - where the radiator neck protrudes through the top of the radiator shell.  Crank hole maybe, but I think too low.

You know you might be right, grips around the neck of the radiator underneath the cap.
