Source for fiberglass panel stock
« on: November 06, 2017, 06:15:15 PM »
Looking for a source where I can purchase some fiberglass panel stock - even gel coated on one side would be great. Need to cut out some mounting brackets etc. Sheets in the 24X24" range would be great.

Not sure how stout you need it but I always use the shower panels from Lowes.  They are 4' x 8' sheets, smooth on one side.  I don't use them for brackets but door cards and interior panels.  May have to spray some Pam on your workbench and lay up as many layers as you need.  For larger pieces like that I've used a roller then just threw everything away after.  I'm sure you already know this!

Ed another thing you might check out, local truck repair shops for thicker glass chunks. (1/8" to 1/4")  I've always had a good selection of chunks off busted up truck/school bus hoods laying around for various projects. Usually most shops will give you a whole hood for the taking.

Add: Yep the older stuff had flater panels. The tops of most sleepers were fiberglass and pretty flat.  Aftermarket racing hoods and decklids. Early this summer I tossed an aftermarket 73-78 chevy pick-up hood that had separated from the inner structure and blew off in the wind.

10-4 been checking out my local Peterbilt salvage area...nothing yet. Those new tractor fiberglass front ends don't have a flat surface anywhere.  Need to check out my local auto salvage yard.. kind remember seeing some of those older RV's with fiberglass panels parked out back. They are only open Fri/Sat..I like walking around there anyway.

Just made some fiberglass angle by laying the glass into a length of steel angle iron. The fiberglass running boards are about 2-1/2" short since I increased the wheelbase.  Made a mold from the running board and now have a cast piece to work in.

I bought them as a package deal with fenders off craigslist. Think they are Speedway Motors stuff...I suspect they are from a 34 Master.
