Bought a 37 Buick today
« on: April 14, 2017, 09:06:01 PM »
My buddy contacted me yesterday and asked if I would be interested in a 37 Buick Century coupe.  He was buying (4) classic vehicles as a package deal from a gentlemen in Vermont that was reducing his inventory.  59 T-Bird, 59 Olds 88 2dr HT, 1969 AMX 390/4sp  and the 37 Buick.  To make a long story short I had no idea that I would be buying a 37 buick and have it in my yard today.

It is very solid, no engine/tranny but has all the glass, garnish molding, bumpers, dash parts, door mechanics and locks, handles and every bit of chrome and badges that I can see boxed up.  It even has the VIN plate and clean title. My buddy gave me a very good deal that I couldn't refuse.

I have a LS 6.0/4L80e 2WD driveline in my barn looking for a home...the car had a straight eight so I know the LS will  be fine in there.  My initial plans are to get some rear fender covers, whitewalls and make a tail dragger.  But in the meantime..I plan to store it in my barn.

Nice score Ed.  Wow that has a long hood!
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

Thanks Tom

I always liked the looks of the Pontiac and Buick straight eight hood, I even lengthened my 33 Chevy hood by 5".

Cool Ed!  I use to fish next to a straight eight four door about that year, sat on the river bank.(prob still there) Didn't think much about it other than that long nose. Had it been a coupe,  I would have probably taken it home ;)

my friend Frank has a 38 LaSalle looks like that with long nose, he put a 4.5 liter caddie  northstar V8 32 valves all aluminum with S10 200R4 auto behind it.

Sure fills up the engine compartment side to side .

That is a beauty. There's  probably enough room for a pair of LSs in there.

That's reall a nice find Ed. welcome to the buick club, and don't let everyone say you have a big nose. That's just plain hurtful

Thanks guys...looking at the frame up front the rails bow out around the current cross member.  Looks like I'm going to need some "Buick Guys" advice on how to install a Mustang II type cross member or other recommendations for an IFS.

OK. You guys know me, old time inline guy. From '36-'52 Buick made a 320 ci straight eight. I think there was something about the '39 Special the male them more desirable. Much of the engine was similar to the 302 GMC. Many records have been set at Bonneville and on drag strips all over the country with them. An old friend of mine had a dragster in the '60s that had a '39 Special in it with a custom one off cam from Crower and home made injection. It set a record that still stands. ( because the class was illuminated) There are at least three Buick 8 powered cars at  Bonneville yet. Bill Fisher's book about Chevy and GMC sixes has a section on Buicks. This may be the reason the engine is not with your coupe. In my warped and totally biased opinion a HOT 320 Buick in your very straight unmolested Coupe would be a much cooler and more interesting build than just another nice old car with a new V8 in it. :)

Well shoot. I made a quick trip to my old fishing hole up on the river after I got done mowing. Thought maybe there might be something you could use, it's gone. Somebody must have hauled them off couple years back when scrap price was up. There were 3 or 4 old sedans there. :-[

Very cool find.
A mustake IFS would seem small for that car, could always go camaro, nova subframe. If it was mine I'd like more beefy suspension.

HMMM. I got a line on another 401 nailhead. I think the mustang could be made to work.

What a great score, Ed. I wish I had friends like that!! Good luck with it.
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn
