Old surplus B-17 story
« on: April 11, 2017, 09:23:50 AM »
I was cleaning out my old text messages to try to speed up my phone, when I ran back across this. I'm sure most of you have seen this pic of a post war gas station/cafe but maybe not the funny story that brought it to it's location.
I had sent it to my 'ol buddy Lonnie (a couple years ago), he use to be the "Bear in the air" in the 70's early in his KHP career. He just had a single engine classification as this man did.  Lonnie new a lot of WW2 pilots with crazy stories. Anyway we found it funny as we use to do crazy stuff similar but with vehicle purchases. I did once have a crazy dream like this that involved Lonnie and I, about finding a B-29 years ago. ::)

It is now off it's stand and is undergoing a complete restoration back to flying condition.

That is a great story. I remember seeing several airplane Cafe's and Gas stations as a kid on our trips from Texas to California. The storage and salvage site near Kingman AZ was something I'll never forget. My uncle and his cousin were pilots and my parents built planes for Douglas so planes were part of us. It seemed that the thousands of planes covering the desert near Kingman went on forever. They did go as far as you could see for miles.

Better to beg forgivness than to ask permision. ;D
I never knew of a storage/disposal facility in Kansas, I looked it up more and the man had actualy bought the B-17 @ Altus, Ok storage/ disposal.

Sixball I would have loved to have seen that site at Kingman. I was flying out of Santa Barbra years back, and up stairs at the airport resturant there were pictures of the disasembly of B-17s and others on the airfield at Fomoso, (drag strip near Bakersfield Ca.)

My son and I were in the process of buying out an long closed Studebaker dealership and shop in Altus, Oklahoma. Then a trucker fell asleep and drove into the parts room and burned it down. It was sad to see the charred new parts many still on the shelves. The guy gave us a bunch of used engines and trannys. They are still sitting at a friend's in Texas.
