Body Structure 27 Chev Roadster
« on: April 26, 2016, 02:15:46 PM »
Sixball had asked for some info on body support so here goes.
Mine is done way different than most do it. My Chev coupe I had done in wood. After 106,000 miles back in the early 80's I found that it caused a few issues so this car was done in steel, plus I am not very proficient with wood.  The wood work on here by you guys is fantastic.
When I built this frame I added 2" x 3/8" thick steel plate under the upper frame flange  area  ,so when the body was mounted and aligned all I did was drill and tap. That's what the body bolt  pictured bolts into. There are 5 bolts per side.  The perimeter tubing is 1" X 4" .   I bent 1/2" x 1 3/4" rect. tubing to follow the contour of the cowl and 1/4 panel door opening. These are welded at the base. These are fairly strong and would be enough when the sheetmetal is hung on them.  Then I built a cage to support and strengthen the body. Might help in a crash. I tend to over build. This  is very strong and you won't see it , plus it makes a base to weld mounts and brackets to especially under the cowl. The trunk rails are bent to conform to trunk opening.
I actually picked this car up with a forklift from the top rails with front and rear end and motor and trans installed.
I have more pictures and if I confused anyone, which I do often,  please ask. Ron

Ron,
Awesome fabrication work!  That definitelylooks like it'll be very strong. Thanks for posting these pics.  Any other pics you have that might help others would surely be welcome.

Thanks you. That looks like it would pass tech for Bonneville. At any rate strong and neat. Any more pictures you would like to post would be welcomed. Did you build the frame? How did you take measurements to determine width of quarters at the doors and rear of passenger compartment? How did you attach body panels? Did you use any original wood for patterns or measurements?

Thanks for all the kind words.  Didn't get this kind of reaction from any body in El Paso, where most of this car was built. At least now I know I"m on the right track. Thanks again.
Sixball.. The frame is a modified original 27 Chev stock frame that was under my coupe. Photos below.
The measurements for the 1/4 s where taken from original wood structure, BUT I narrowed the rear a total of 3" to keep the rear from looking " balloned out ". All body panels were welded at the door posts , trunk opening and along the bottom to the base tube. Also the door posts are welded to the cage.
I have about 2 sets of original coupe wood , so yes I used them alot for panel alignment. Also a photo of how the cowl wraps around the door post.   Rear panel does the same. Hinge was temporary.

ChevRon, Thanks again. You did a really nice job on the frame too. The front spring set up is interesting. I am keeping the parallel leafs on mine and am working on ways to get it lower. It is a battle I've been fighting with my '53 pickup for over 40 years. Parallel springs. low cars and dirt roads are a thigh mix. Thanks you, your posts and pictures have helped.

Sixball You are welcome. I know about trying to get parallel leafs low. I am probably going to have to modify my front setup. My road is so bad up here that I am going to have to trailer my car down to the hiway.  Sure hope you can get working on your roadster. I'll show more on my spring setup as Im trying to my pictures ready for a build thread. Ron

Probably and to get the car safely to the road highway he could air shock it higher, then when at bottom let air out of shocks to lower back to normal ride height.

BUT, what does he do when he comes home and needs to travel the tough road back up .  ????   Needs to have an accessory cig lighter for air pump to pump the shocks back up .  Or get one that clips onto battery.

We put Air Ride on my son's Studebaker wagon just because of our road issue. It was not to make it ridiculously low but high enough to clear the boulders. My roadster is not going to be really low it'll be more old time racer style.

A small 12vdc air compressor can be added to fill the tank. Like the ones used for air ride system
