1932 splash apron
« on: October 19, 2014, 01:10:20 PM »
I've been fitting up my fenders an running boards this past week and set the front fenders in place today. Thought I would test fit my front splash apron { fiberglass} the rack an pinion is interfering with the fit, I also used a mustang II front end. My question is if I lower the rack to clear the apron how much can I drop it so that it doesn't change the geometry so much that I create a bump steer problem? I think that's the right term.

I've lowered gear boxes down about an inch without any ill effects. I wouldn't chance more than that, but I don't know if a rack would be any different?

Make darn sure you're not below scrub line.

not having a mustang based IFS in my 35 coupe, can the rack be moved to the rear to avoid the gravel shield problem. ????

I know this doesn't help your problem 62131, but a couple weeks ago I saw a '31 or '32 (nice red paint job) on, I think, ebay that had a similar problem. His solution.....he cut out holes in the fenders near the apron to make room for control arms. :o
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

Chopper   I don't have clearance problem with the fenders clearing the upper a-arms, I chose a MII front end that gave me the correct wheel stance in the front that put the top hats on the out side of the frame to eliminate that problem, to do this I had to use a longer tie rod end out of a Ford Granada,  there was no way I going bubble my fenders for clearance. I've seen that done and  in my opinion it doesn't look right.   The issue I have  is the front apron and clearance for the rack, I've given it some thought over the last couple of days and I think I'm going to modify my apron. I think I will cut and extend the part of the apron just in front of the radiator shell a couple of inches which should not be that noticeable, which should let the rack slide up onto the mount where it belongs.

I can picture what you are saying. I don't think a couple inches will even be noticed.

I think I found the issue with my apron, I bought another grill shell that was better than the one that came with the car. It had a totally different bottom brace assembly than the original one. It made the shell set lower in the bracket, I changed those tonight and now the apron fits a lot closer. I still will have to modify some to clear the gear assembly in the rack.

Let's see some pictures if you got them.
