Title: Zeroed in my sights
Post by: Rattiac on February 04, 2021, 09:16:06 PM
Today during lunch break I went to the range and started adjusting the sights on my pistol.
My first shots were low and to the right.  Adjusting at 1/4 turns I finally got center.

Nice to see someone actually shooting.  We have a couple feet of snow up here...so it may be a couple of weeks before I can get out back to my range.  Ordered a Lyman Mag 25 lead furnace about a week and half ago..still hasn't even shipped from Optics Planet :(  Ordered custom 38 bullet mold from MP Molds in Slovenia (Melania's stomping grounds) last week and it arrived in 4 days.

Don't want to but have to cast my own lead bullets..because the shelves are cleaned out.

 Rattiac, That will work.  8)

I like casting bullets and reloading. It is somehow relaxing to me and there is a comfortable satisfaction in turning your loads to your firearms.

Yeah, we may be reduced to following the predators around and eating what they leave.  ;D

I was out again today visiting a few more gun shops. Some are saying no primers for another year or so. Did find some 12GA. Tuekey Loads $20.00 a box

There are actually videos of folks making their primers...

here is just one of the many:

Think I'll wait...I have 5K which is sufficient...plan on doing a lot of practice with 22LR . I collected several thousands rds of 22LR preparing for grandkids...but they are more interested in other stuff right now.

I've watched several of those guys making primers, believe I'll use what I have and buy more when I  find them.

Yeas ago I read a story in a hunting magazine about someone who hunted in Central America and saw native people reloading 22 rim fire ammo. They ground up match heads and made a paste that they wiped into the inside of the rim. They used black powder and about 8 of ten fired. The trick was that the cartridge had to be indexed in a revolver or bolt action so the firing pin hit in a new place.  Again any gun is better than no gun but a gun that doesn't fire every time might not be better than a sharp rock.  ::)

One of the most interesting discussions to me is the old, "If you could only have one gun..." Which has so many angles to it.

I see where the reloaders are swaging fired 22 rimfire cases with lead to make rifle bullets.

I seen 22 and 22 mag at both places I went today, both had plenty of each

22 mag has been scarce here for a couple of years. The 17 has taken over. I like the 22 mg better.

Swaging lead into spent 22 brass was one of the first jacketed bullets. I used to shoot a lot of cast lead bullets with gas checks on the base. The allow a bit more velocity without accuracy robbing leading of the bore. I played a lot with alloys and hardening. It is a fun pastime.

I really like single rifles...one is a New England Sportster in 17HMR with 6-18 scope..it has a heavy barrel and is extremely accurate.

I would like a Savage 93 in 22 mag or if they would make the A22 with a heavy barrel like they did with the 17. I also have a thing for single shot rifles from muzzle loaders to bolt, falling block, break, and trapdoor. Target shooting with them is fun and hunting with them seems to sharpen my focus knowing a second shot is likely not and option.

My first gun was a used Stevens bolt action single shot that I got when I was 8. I packed it everywhere I could and we accounted for a lot of small game and predators before we left Texas six years later. My cousin and I even played golf at the Country Club with the Stevens in with my mismatched set of clubs and his 410 single shot in his bag. There were also bows and more arrows than clubs. He was 3 days younger than me and we camped, hunted, and fished pretty much untethered from grade school through junior high.

My first gun was a 410 bolt action held three in the mag and one in the chamber don't remember the brand the cost was like $34.99 The gun was stolen by a so called friend who still owes me $40.00 on the $100.00 I loaned him 40 plus years ago, I'm sure there's a saying for friends like that,

I haven't had a chance to target practice in a long time. Hopeing it's like riding a bike.

My first gun was an Ithica M-49 (S-L-LR) lever action single shot Dad picked it up second hand and give it to me for my 8th birthday. It was dead nuts acurate too. It was a safe little rifle to teach good habits, and one shot at a time, my aim got good. Shot it so much I flattend out the firing pin, (fire about 1 in 4 shells).

About 10 yrs ago I got brave and tore it down, pulled pin and hammered it back out on the anvil. I touched it back up with a file, it works great again😁 I did somewhere thru the yrs manage to lose the rear sight step ramp. Guess I should make a new one. Too bad in the future I will lose it in a boating accedent😉

I bought that Savage from Bud Rusk at his second hand store for $10.  Bud was an old cowboy and had a relative who died in the Alamo and had a county named for him. I blew it up just before we left Texas trying to make a muzzle loader out of it.  :o I have my wife's grandfather's Remington 22 pump. You can drop a long rifle down the muzzle until it catches on the rim but it still groups in 3" at 25 yards. I love 22 rifles, some are tack drivers.

If you look on eBay you may find the sight ramp you need. They still sell gun parts. Everything but receivers.

Enough snow melted that I finally took a walk out to my range today.  Walked up on two deer ... all of my props are looking great.   Just need to run new nylon drive line for my moving target and place my newly fabricated metal backstop into position.

We were informed today that a hearing we can not attend will take place on this bill tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM. This bill covers a lot of territory from adding power of law to signs, loss of rights and firearms for not seeing a sign. outlaw private modification of firearms, outlawing some gun parts and partial receivers.
It will be passed probably with no input from Republican legislators or the public. By 9:00 Am tomorrow thousands of Nevadans will be criminals.

Nevada has 17 counties 15 & 1/2 of them would not support this but with election fraud for the last 20 ears Democrats have stolen the Nevada Government.

Mine are in the basement but I don't he'll be able to pack them out.  :) Darn Trump, the Dems inherited a country where the stairs had just gone to hell.
