Don't know how many of you guys are into planting...I have planted over 10,000 trees around here ,...one at a time over several years.
Over those years we have received Omaha Steak deliveries and I always save the Styrofoam boxes.
I use them to stratify chestnuts and general seeds. I make a mix of peat moss and potting soil, dampen the mix, drop in my seeds and place the container out in the unheated barn. The area needs to be in a dark area..no sunlight..you want the cold. Normally do this late November and open them up in early Spring to remove the rooted seeds.
If you have a problem with squirrels...a little shot of spray on undercoating around the seam and weight on top helps!

Good tip, Thanks. I have been able to get some aspens started here but they need a lot of water so They will only take near the springs. I think I have killed the Ponderosa pines and Douglas firs by over watering. I keep trying to restore some of the native trees that were removed in the mining days. Man ED, 10,000 is a lot of trees! I wonder if Johnny Appleseed planted that many?
