Hauled these around for 3 years my wife has 2 old ones in the '40s and a '76--? Model...went and bought some lumber, she had a plan in her head so This is how it turned out 1st photo is no polyurethane on the tail gate....she hasn't decided on finish for the wood white  wash..light stain or let it turn naturally..

Tell the wife she has good ideas!😁  looks good and stout too.
My friend that died from cancer here while back, made a lot of stuff like that. She started finishing the would with a small propane torch. The out door stuff held up real good. She built me a spare toilet paper holder for my bathroom and did the same with the torch. Just throwing that out there for ideas😁

Haven't thought of that ...I will let her see your posting....she has another one...but I'm not buying any costly wood...I have some old 4x4s and 2x4s left over from the fence job...gonna be rustic and built in patina....better hoard that toilet paper...this virus is gonna be here while and predicted to be here in the winter...

Those are great. she is talented and so ae you.  I hve an antique glider swing that is half stripped and has been for quite some time, If my wife remembers I have it, I will be in trouble

I like that finish with the red tailgate. Whitewash would look good with a blue or green tailgate.....my two cents ::)

Took thoughts of white wash this is the last bench we did..  Aged the  new wood with steel wool and vinagar...

Mike...distilled white vinegar...clean steel wool with soap and water to remove any oil that may be there...heat vinegar in 12 ounce mason jar(I microwaved it)...then shred one steel wool pad...cut into short 3/4"  pieces  into vinegar. ...let set overnight partial covered with lid.. Then add 1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide.....then use as you like....

lmao, that's the SWEET AND SOUR recipe used to age wood for model railroads.

I tried it and did not like it.  Smell . 

 I used 99% pure isopropinal rubbing alcohol with USMC BLACK...FIEBINGS LEATHER DYE, 2 ink squirters full to 4 oz bottle.

Ages basswood to a nicely silvery weathered colour.

FATnLOW, You could use two tail gates. One for the back and one on the front. Then hinge them to make a recliner. You could position them with tail gate chains or some cool hot rod contraption using E-brake handles and shaft levers.  :D

They look really good. I guess all the Chevy pickups are still using their tailgates.  ::)
