Title: Utah earthquake
Post by: Rattiac on March 18, 2020, 09:22:50 AM
Just had an earthquake about 10 minutes ago.
Shook the house really good. I've never experienced one like this. Could feel the house moving side to side.
News said it was a 5.7  :o

Fairly serious for the area. Nevada is always shaking but mostly small.

While getting ready for work, about 20 mins after the initial quake we got a loud bang shook everything (like someone dropped our house a few inches) then the rumble came.
Our house creeked after the bang. Scary.
25 aftershocks this morning.

Walked around the house before leaving.
No damage that I could see. I'll look again once I get home.
My heart-rate has been up all morning.
Kinda exhausted. Eating lunch right now. Things are calming down here but Costco has been hit with a flood of people again.

The angle moroni on the temple lost his arm and trumpet. Freaking some people out.

There are reports of this being felt clear down to southern Utah , Colorado and Vegas.

Well, back to the truck im working on.

Earthquakes give you an odd, feeling like some one is shaking your house...and you move with it...scary feeling...and always looking up to see if something is going to fall on you like  the  ceiling or roof structure....glad everything was ok and you are ok...

I left work a few minutes early and got a call, the furnace wasn't working. Once I got to it, we found out the water heater wasn't working as well.
I think the gas company had shut down a complete grid.
Re-lit the pilot lights , made dinner and watched a movie together.
I'll do a more thorough inspection tomorrow. Setting up a game plan just incase it shakes tonight.
If we have to. Im getting camping gear ready to move out to the trailer. Can probably stay at families as well.

Glad to hear you made it thru ok. Seen on the news Kennecott had an acid spill after the quake. Sounds like you have a plan anyway, stay safe.

Found out through my dad (he hauls tankers of sulfuric acid and such) that a line to one of the hydrochloric acid tanks had broke and that stuff clouds up when released. So they shut down hwy 201 that goes right by there .
What a day. Im pooped. 😴

Hope you have a less stressful day tomorrow. Glad you are safe and got things working. We are getting the snow you like to play in.  As of last night Homewood at Tahoe reported 7.6 feet in the last 4 days . There's more coming. Of course the ski areas are closed due to the Chinese virus. We had 4.5 inches yesterday and a couple more inches tonight. Better than the house shaking.

Well Rattiac, They must be moving west. We just got a pretty good shock here. Not like yours. Probably just stresses evening out. A little after 6:30.

It was a 5.0 near Carson City (Indian Hills).

Thanks guys for the well wishes 👍.

That's crazy about the quakes. Hope no damage near your end.
I think I'd rather deal with a quake than this corona crap. Everything is shutting down here. Wife is working from home. Im still working. Thankfully.
My boss said if the city told him to shut down he'd tell them to get #!@&$=.

Rumor mill says it's all made up to hunt terrorists.
Hmm.

On the bright side. I got to work on the trailer tonight. At least that feels normal. 😉
Stay safe guy's.

The down graded the Carson quake to 4.5, a lot less than yours. The center was about a mile from a friends place. No one hurt and little f any damage.

I hate all the rumors and misinformation about the virus. There are criminals using it to get into peoples' houses and robbing them. I'm surprised they haven turned all the prisoners loose so they can have the proper social distancing.  The quake was very near Nevada State Prison.

We get smaller ones all the time. Most are from north central Oklahoma where all the fracking is going on. Last year or so a couple 80 miles N.E. of me at 4.2 to 5.2 in the salt mine areas. Most the Okies have been around 3 to 4.

Before my phone crashed I had a weather app out of Wichita that alerted/showed recent quakes, location and intensity reported within a few mins.  If I felt some thing I could look real quick. Living a short block from the Union Pacific and U.S. Highway 54... it's hard to know the difference sometimes ;D

I wish all you guys the best dealing with those quakes. We don't get them too often on the east coast, even when we do they are of little consequence...….so far.
The corona virus is another story. All the schools are closed, everything is being done online. My wife and son are working from home and my family has been self quarantined for about 6 days now, just trying to do our part to distance ourselves and keep everyone healthy. I, however, because of my job am going to work every day. They have set a curfew of 8PM in Philly.
Stay safe and healthy guys!!

James Whitcolm Riley (1849-1916) was known as the the Hoosier poet wrote a great poem inspired from a series of earth quakes in that part of the country in the 1800s. "When the World Bu'st Through" was one of many children's poems that seem to be aimed at scaring the crap out of kids to get them to behave and do as told. Really not a bad goal. My grandmother could recite Riley poems by the hour. She gave her book of his poems to my brother and me the day we moved back to Texas from California March 21st, 1949 the first day of spring according to the inscription. It was given to her when she was a little girl. I can see it from where I am sitting.
Here is a link to the poem: https://books.google.com/books?id=MSFsROT0TP0C&pg=PA125&lpg=PA125&dq=james+whitcomb+riley+When+the+World+Bu%27sts+Through&source=bl&ots=l5xceoEepe&sig=ACfU3U1502pwW9ZGsuWHaD0LRu5eQZL8dA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjXm4ak7LPoAhX6CjQIHT4aDQwQ6AEwDnoECBAQAQ#v=onepage&q=james%20whitcomb%20riley%20When%20the%20World%20Bu'sts%20Through&f=false (https://books.google.com/books?id=MSFsROT0TP0C&pg=PA125&lpg=PA125&dq=james+whitcomb+riley+When+the+World+Bu%27sts+Through&source=bl&ots=l5xceoEepe&sig=ACfU3U1502pwW9ZGsuWHaD0LRu5eQZL8dA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjXm4ak7LPoAhX6CjQIHT4aDQwQ6AEwDnoECBAQAQ#v=onepage&q=james%20whitcomb%20riley%20When%20the%20World%20Bu'sts%20Through&f=false)

My wife and I shopped during the senior hour at the grocery store yesterday. Quite an experience. A lot os scared old people. I felt so sorry for many of them. They just wanted to get in before all the toilet paper and prune juice was gone. There was plenty of everything. No empty shelves, no pushing and grabbing items. No one grumpier than old people usually are. As the younger people were showing up for their turn obviously some had been home schooling since the schools closed. In the parking lot I saw a young mother scraping a "MY CHILD IS A GOOD STUDENT" bumper sticker off of her car.  ::)  ;D There is some evidence that Californians and citified Nevadans ar making runs to rural towns in both states and buying up all they can. Probably to resell at home. Why else would you buy 20 gallons of milk?

If this lasts long enough we will see the difference between the Military and the Militia.

Sixball, never seen that poem before.

That happened to our little grocery store last week. Boss lady was out, two out of town couples came in and bought all hamburger, milk, patatoes, toilet paper and paper towels 😡

Owner was pissed when she got back, she said it wasn't nesessary to limit because towns people weren't hoarding. Had to limit purchases signs, truck order was a day late and only recieved 1/3 her order due to Amarillo warehouse shortage. Now we haven't caught up yet.
