Title: Block sanding peaks
Post by: sammons on February 12, 2020, 08:45:44 PM
Easy way to block straight lines on sharp peaks. Probably a lot of you fellas no this, but some may not.

blocked the first coat of primer on the Viking door the other day. With very little control of my hands/wrist, I couldn't sand a straight peak to save my life  :(.  This morning I thought I would tackle it the easy way dad showed me back in the late 60s.

A friend came thru town and stopped by to say hi just as I was laying down a straight line of masking tape  and he ask what was I doing that for. So, I explained it to him. He said " Well that would have been a tab bit of info I could have used when I was blocking out my old Camaro. I chased that line up and down for days"  ;D  So......maybe it will help some of you.

You can mark both ends of the peak with a pencil and use a chalk line, or yard stick and pencil. I use to just mark the ends, grab some 1/8" pinstripe tape and lay a straight line either top side or bottom of the line. Then lay the 3/4" masking tape on the other and pull stripe tape off. Block up to tape and last several strokes up on tape, (the tape should be just below peak) making sure you don't sand thru tape.

Blow/wipe off dust, lay another line of masking tape right up to the other side before removing the old tape line. Sand opposing side same. Remove all tape and reprime. Your liine will only be as staight as you tape it off! Don't worry about the sharp peak line yet. If you line is not quite there, repeat. If you are nice and straight. Use light pressure  and with 360/400 grit paper, put the slight round edge to peak you want. You can use a kitchen sponge with the sand paper over it to keep the round even.

Hope this helps some one from chasing that line ;D

Pics may help.
