Title: '03 Silverado
Post by: sammons on June 13, 2019, 02:15:38 PM
Rather off topic for this board, but couldn't find an ansewer on my limited access to the internet.

Vehicle- 2003 (03-06) 2wd Silverado, 5.3/4L60/ Variable Power Assist Rack and Pinion Steering.

My buddy Tom hit a deer yesterday so I went to go pick him up at the Chevy dealer 50 miles away. This is the most miles I have drove in one shot since getting the pickup last Sept. By the time I got there my wrists and arms were spent from this stiff steering. Tom had to drive me back home. Note...there is absolutley nothing wrong with the steering on this pickup, its me and this damned arthritis! >:(

Is there anyway that you fellas know of to Fool, Bypass, Disable the variable assist to go full assist power steering (easy steer-light feel- good old fashioned power steering)?  If it were a 97-98,  they still had a gearbox and you could simply unplug the wires at the back of the pump and go full time/full power assist. 99-06 changed to rack and pinion and maybe tied into electronic brake control system.

I think I'm just screwed and limited to a 50 mile radius when I drive alone. Any ideas  would be greatly appriciated.

Wish I could help...searched for a solution but only learned that GM had a bunch of recalls related to power assist.

Thanks for looking Ed. I kept coming across the same thing too. Some of those later model story' we pretty scary. "Suddenly no steering or brakes" :o They can keep their fly-by wire vehicles. I found something about changing setting via computer program, but that was for later models. My mechanic hasn't found anything either.  :(

Looks like i'll be figuring out how to get a pre '78 Chevy car (Camaro, Chevelle, Elcamino, Monte Carlo) like my original plan, and give brother back the Silverado. Hate too, I love it except for the steering.
