Title: 68 Camaro , not getting blinkers brake lights or hazards.
Post by: 28chevyguy on June 05, 2019, 03:13:42 PM
I can put the car on the road after these gremlins are found.

Heres what happens.   Pull headlight switch, I have running lights and market lights.

Hit blinkers , nothing .  hit brakes , Nothing .   hazard button (  hear the relay clicking but no hazard lights come on )

I had the old lady stand behind the car , it appears I can get a rear directional to light up ONLY IF the running lights are on but it wont blink … turn off all lights , nothing .

So pretty much the car has nothing besides running lights and tail lights.   Directional and stop light fuses are good , getting power to the brake light switch.
I know the brake light switch comes out and goes into the turn signal switch.   The blinker switch is ancient and I have a new one coming from autozone tomorrow, going to just plug in the pigtail and see if anything decides to work .

I have 2 ground in the front by each marker light and one in the rear .

It is set up as a RS camaro with correct RS front and rear body harnesses ( new)  The dash harness is non-RS and original .  Not sure what the heck i have on my plate right now . any help is appreciated , i want to drive this thing but dont want to get rear ended LOL

Never hurts to check the switches. :)

My brother was forever getting stopped for no turn or brake lights. ('67 RS/SS) We would scrape the bulb hole on the tail lamp and same to the socket. It would work for a while then it would lose ground again.

My girlfriend had similar but taillights intermitent also. Hers was just a plain jane '67. Fixed both permenently in the mid 80s by sodering a male flat spade on each tail lamp socket directly, "Y'ed"  them together (each side) and plugging a ground wire on and over to center back panel support and screwing that end. Never had a problem since.

I don't recall much of a diff in reg Camaro and RS on the dash wiring with exception to the console gage cluster.

           Good luck!

thanks sammons great info !   so I fixed the brake lights at least, a pin going to the rear harness was popped out a little.  that seems ok

the weird turn signal problem ,  I only can flicker the rear bulbs with the lever if im pressing the brake and the running light/ lights on at same time.  That would make sense the brakes get interrupted going through the blinker cam , but why wouldn't they work with the lights off and brakes off????  been looking all over for something I missed...  going to plug in a new directional assembly tomorrow and probably pick up a new relay , go from there.

oh and neither headlights will come on , no power to the headlight sockets I must have really missed something here.

If the new the turn signal switch dosen't cure your problem, check your front bulb sockets (maybe rear too). If i recall they still have the two spring loaded contact buttons for the 1157 bulbs. I've had the spring rust apart and not putting enough pressure to make good contact with bulb. Also check wire crimped on button, sometimes the frey and only a couple strands carry power.

Ist gen Camaro's and Mustangs had bad taillight grounds. The housing was grounded through body by attachment bolts. Any corrosion or some times new housing gasket would interfear with ground. Then the corrosion build up between housing and bulb socket  >:(

If it's a universal style turn signal switch. Open it up and the blue wire is known to break off of the lever itself.

I can't speak to your problems, specifically, and this is probably not a big help, but I know that most electrical problems start and finish with bad grounds.

Thanks for suggestions !   So I got everything to work amazingly enough,  I couldn't tell ya exactly what I did but after wiggling stuff playing with bulbs and changing fuses a bunch of swapping switches cleaning dash bulbs contacts ect ect  ,  I have brake lights , blinkers and hazards .  I did plug in the new blinker switch and let it hang though out all of this,  then once it started working I swapped the plug back into the old blinker switch and it still worked !!  3 days of cursing haha  thanks guys
