Title: Running a V-belt "short" pump on later 1988 Small Block
Post by: 28chevyguy on January 03, 2019, 12:38:57 PM: My roadster has a 1988 Small block 305 with center bolt valve covers.

I want to run a V belt and because of tight space , it needs to be a short pump to fit , that way I can run the thin single groove crank pulley. Was hoping to have the pump and alternator on the same belt with a "stock" old style lower alt. mount set up if possible.

Will any short pump for earlier style SBC work on this later engine? any tips on simple V-belt set ups ? Thanks !

Post by: sammons on January 03, 2019, 01:07:51 PM: Yep, the older short water pump fits. I use the short pump on most all of my builds. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if Chevy had a factory low mount Alt. I believe there are several Co's selling the lower alt V belt bracket kit.

There are many, right or left lower mounts. Looks like several different heights availible also.

BTW: Center bolt heads will mount on an older SBC, if the oil dip stick is on the passenger side, it's a pre 86 SBC with two piece rear main. If the dip stick is on the passenger side it post 1986 SBC and has the one piece rear main seal. Just mention this because I have center bolts heads on my 1979 block.

Post by: madmike3434 on January 03, 2019, 06:32:47 PM: there are two short water pumps that gm made. One has a 5/8" snout and the other is a heavier duty unit with 3/4" snout.

I think the 5/8" snout is pre 1970 aluminum corvette short unit. The other 3/4" snout is corvette 1980--1996.

Some of these pumps are **reverse flow** as used with a serpentine system. I don't know what to look at to tell the diff as far as marks or numbers on the surface...

The billet low mount alternator bracket was available from street and performance in Mena ARK, not sure if still in business after death of owner. I would contact SPEEDWAY MOTORS in Lincoln NEB or YOGI's or google their websites..

Some of the brackets for low mount alt require a special 100 amp alt with a 10 o'clock adaptor.

I wanted to mount the alternator low and out of the way but some of those brackets won't fit the narrow frame rails like on my 33. I had to make my own bracket and get a smaller alternator to get it to fit the way I wanted. Here's a couple pics.

Yes Tfoch Just like that !! Its tight down there , my motor is pretty low , I doubt a GM alternator even fits down there... what alternator did you go with? going to need the smallest alt. possible .

Post by: 28chevyguy on January 03, 2019, 09:56:12 PM: not sure if I should go with 1 wire or 3 wire... I've wired up plenty of 3 wire setups just wondering for once if I should go with 1 wire on this car ? This car will have super minimal circuitry .

Post by: madmike3434 on January 03, 2019, 10:19:17 PM: I believe I have 3/4--1" total of belt adjustment on mine. I cut up a V belt until it butted together , then bought belt that I thought was right and also one slightly shorter, I ended up using that one.

For my 35 roadster build , I have that same mounting setup from street and performance on the motor block and I have a GILMER COGGED BELT DRIVE 1 1/2" wide powder coated gloss black .

Cannot mock it up as dummy block has no crank and balancer.

Have not seen the Nippon denso alt before , but they made the 1988---1994 special lightweight( 10 pounds ) corvette starter , gear reduction that really works great.

Post by: 28chevyguy on January 07, 2019, 04:38:58 PM: Ordered the alt. probably will try and make my own adjustable mount using the slotted portion of a top mount 305 bracket.

hope I have enough room , thinking the motor might be too low and might have to undo the mounts and raise / re weld.

hopefully not but its definately possible .
