Title: STARTER PROBLEM. Ticking me OFF ***FIXED

So trying to fire up the 28 roadster .    I have a plane jane '88 305 and T5 transmission from a v8 iroc/ trans am

brand new 153 tooth flywheel and clutch.

the new starter I bought barely cranks the motor, I have a good 1000amp battery WITH a  200 amp jump pack...

The starter sounds tired as hell like it could be rubbing on something slowing it down,  no matter how much or little i shim , same thing , will only crank the motor with the plugs out and pretty slow at that .   It  Will NOT crank with the plugs in... thats how weak the starter is... brought it back to napa got a replacement... still same problem.    I DO NOT have the bellhousing spacer separator plate between the motor and transmission... is that my problem?????

guy on the phone at jegs told me to get a mini torque starter than is shimmable in every way including shimming the Bendix...

im thinking out loud... the bellhousing separator plate is just going to push the trans back a little... its not going to change the geometry of the starter and flywheel spacing... 

looks like im heading towards a tear down .

Just pulled motor/trans out pulled trans off , same problem . cranks super slow , wont barely crank with plugs in .

Been there  >:(  Bought a running Impala(350) pulled motor/trans and scraped the rest. Needed starter for another project, grabbed that one off. A month later I installed the motor in another car, was in a hurry so I went across the street for a rebuilt starter, slow/dragged. Took it back, exchanged for another. Second new one was slow too. Took back and got the argument that it was my car, said to hell with it. Grabbed an old used one out of my bin.... worked fine! Just cause it's rebuilt, don't mean squat these days. Same with new batteries.

I would make sure you didn't bump distributor and get the timing off a bit first. Then (probably not, but...)  grab another known battery out of one running to try that.  I agree, that shield shouldn't make any diff (1/16" shallower?)   If all that check out ok......try a known starter. I have pulled one off a running vehicle to test before.  Check ground?) Pain in the a$$, but you have to eliminate each component.

That's all I can think of. A 305 shouldn't have a great amount of compression to over come, cold or hot. Good luck!

Is the battery grounded to the engine or the frame. As sammons stated below it sounds like a poor ground. If it's to the frame make sure it's making good contact and run an additional ground from the frame to the engine or better yet from the battery to the engine. Also check the battery terminals to make sure they are clean and tight and lastly load test the battery . It's possible to have good voltage but not enough amperage from a battery which could cause the condition you are describing.

^^^ you guys are right.

YUP it was a faulty ground cable... I thought it looked ok , but I even added jumper grounds w/ the 200amp starter pack and it did nothing so I was leaning towards something totally different.

2 brand new monster battery cables all bolted tight and grounded and BAM problem solved, cranks like an animal now.

now just going to slap the trans back on and throw it all back in .   what a relief , I was thinkin the motor only has 40k what the hell is going on ... you know when you start over thinking ???

Glad you found the problem. I thought of ground first but presumed you had new cables already, I almost didn't mention it. I usually check all grounds first (Corvette thing)  ;), but my luck it's always the bigger ticket items  ;D

Yes I should have known that , I had a c3 for about 5 years and remember replacing all the battery cables and grounds to fix hard starts.

it was a sneaky little gremlin but its gone now ... just goes to show ,if your main ground goes bad , a jumper cable is NOT going to supply the ground needed for the + amp draw of your starter.

Corvettes do wierd things when searching for a ground. Turned my windshield wipers on ('69) didn't come on but and a low glow came on both turn indicator lights. Yep bad ground on wiper motor  ;D
Years ago my buddy called me up after lunch and said his Camaro wouldn't start at noon, just clicked. I told him to clean cables and posts and tighten. He calls back, that didn't work. Told him I would check it out at break when I came down to get a Coke. Got there he said he had cleaned it with Coke and cables were tight. I asked if he cleaned the posts like i said...."Yep" , Did you take them off and clean them? Well I didn't take them off, but cleaned them.  ::)
I pulled them off, got my pocket knife out and scraped the corrosion off the inside terminals and scraped batt post, tighteded and walla!
"Oh, I didn't think of that", well now you know ;D
