Title: Putting it back together
Post by: munch on August 09, 2018, 01:22:06 PM
I am recovering from foot surgery and have too much time to think...  My car is off being painted and I can't wait to start putting it back together.  I don't want to use the traditional welting for the fenders, ect., but want something to eliminate metal to metal.  Maybe plastic washers?

Can you give me suggestions from your experiences?

Thanks

Always wondered if spraying the fender contact surface with something like clear 3M chip-guard before installation might work?  Maybe sammons can jump in.

comes in 2 shades, clear kinda yellowy and black.

Would mask fender to match body line with masking tape, do the same to the fender itself.  Let the stuff harden up properly and install together.  Should have a pebbly finish.

I use it under my fenders where the tires would kick up stones and pebbles, the 3M is paintable.  I used at least 4 coats to get enough material on for protection.

Much I hope your foots coming along good.  I have a friend that has been fighting some kind of infection on his foot for 9 months now.

Dad always just had me use simple 3m electric tape on both sides. Set back about 1/8" from the outer bend and trim bolt holes out with an Exato knife. He said they use to have a 3/4" wide roll of 1/16" cork  when not using welting back in the 60s. But he said sometimes you could see the cork inbetween.  I wouldn't know why Ed and Mikes sugestions wouldn't work just fine.

Thanks Sammons, I got 4 1/2 more weeks to get the pin removed.  I'm going to celebrate...

Thanks all for the advice.

If you wish to use rubberized cork between fender and quarter panel, I use a permanent black marker pen to color the edge and make the cork color go away.  I should have said that before.
