Title: Tire recycling fees in your state?
Post by: EDNY on May 23, 2018, 07:16:32 AM
About 12 years ago New York State began charging a $2.50 fee for any new tire sold in the state. The purpose was to offset costs to clean up a couple of major tire dumps. Well the dumps were cleaned up but of course NYS has extended the tax several times and is still in play today.

Today in NY if you buy a set of tires you pay the $2.50 new tire fee and additionally another $4-$5 disposal fee for each old tire.

New Tire Cost example for (4) tires $100 each

NY Tax 8%:        $32
New tire Fee:       10
Disposal Fee:       20
Total:               $62

So it's common to see used tires scattered along the road side and people driving on bald tires.

What kind of taxes (fees  ;)) do you have in your state?

In Utah it's a disposal fee of $3 a tire only when disposal not beforehand.
Back in the day when I needed to I just brought the used tires after hour's and left them in their tire bin  for my old dick boss to handle.  ;D
Either way the tire shops/state has to pay to get rid of em.
The dump charges $3 for a mounted wheel/tire and $2 unmounted.
