Title: Need blower motor & fan for Hupp universal car heater
Post by: EDNY on August 02, 2017, 11:29:59 AM
Picked up this old universal car heater but it's missing the internal motor and fan blade.  It's stamped as a 6v unit, the model number on it is 355 - the instructions read Model 555.  Any ideas of  what fan I could make work inside it?  The typical GM squirrel cage blade would be too large. The original propeller style blade was probably about 5" in diameter and 1-1/4" deep.

The heater measures about 7" square and distributed by Huppower Division of Hupp Corporation, Detroit Mich.

Look into the fan for a trans cooler.  As a side note you may be able to get a local radiator shop to build a new core for your unit (if it needs one), put the trans fan on and it should heat you out.

Maybe some sort of computer fan. They come in all sizes.

Ed ...I have an old aftermarket heater fan and motor somewhere in my pile of parts. If I can find it I'll post a picture and you can see what you think.

I found it Ed...As I said it came out of an aftermarket heater that I put in my 57 Chevy after installing the big block because there was no longer any room for the original Chevy setup. I removed it when I sold the car and found that the heater core was showing signs of leaking so I cannibalized the fan and motor and junked the rest...

Moose...looks like a direct bolt in?  I see these heaters selling for over $200 so it definitely needs to be restored. I'll send a PM for payment.

Thanks
Ed

Moose...the stuff arrived today (Thanks)...dropped right in there like it was made for it.  The heater even had a port to tighten the fan blade collar.  The problem I ran into is that the motor turns the wrong direction, tried reversing polarity - no difference. Just took the motor apart and reversed the winding's to the brushes.  Will put it back together tomorrow but need to locate some high temp appliance wiring first.

Nice fit. too bad it sucks instead of blows :o  I am sure you will get it going the right direction.

Looks great Ed.... Glad to see the old blower or in your case sucker  ;D is being put back to work. On a side note, if you look at the logo stamped into the fan blade you'll see The Torrington MFG. Co. That's the town I was born in and after graduation from high school I got my first "Real Job". I worked in the department that made the hubs for those fans for a little over a year before getting drafted and sent  to Vietnam. After being discharged from the army I was going to return to work there and because of a law that was in effect at the time that required the employers to rehire veterans to their original positions I thought I could just start where I left off. I went in and talked to my old boss and he said that I could have my old job back but because there were no openings at the time they would have to let the guy who replace me go. He told me that the guy and his wife just had a baby and it would be tough on him to have to find another job. I told him that I needed a nice long vacation anyway and decided not to return and as it turned out I got involved in the automotive business where I stayed for the rest of my working career which proved to be the best move I ever made. Unfortunately   The Torrington MFG Company is long gone.

Somewhere in my old CarQuest books there is either a book on a section on blower motors and fans. There is a lot of interchange possible.

Can't reverse the polarity of this motor it has wire winding's, motors with magnets can be reversed.  Finding options on eBay but  not sure how to spec what I need.  With the shaft of the motor pointing towards you the shaft turns "clockwise"..it needs to be CCW so I not sure what I need to order CCW or CW. (How do they point the motor to determine rotation direction)

Glad I have the fan blade it would be harder to locate, and it can't be flipped over because the fan pitch is the same as threads on a nut...can be flipped and threaded on either side.  I do see a couple of motors with the shaft exiting both ends...I would only need to cut off one end.

Rotation should be looking at the front (fan) end.

Ed...It has always been my understanding that you could reverse either the field winding or the armature winding polarity but not both to change the rotation of a wound field DC motor.  Should be doable .

I spoke with our local starter rebuild shop...he said only magnet motors can be reversed by rotating the magnets?  I was going to try it anyway but after opening it the brushes need R&R and the fiber thrust washers need replacement - have no idea where to get them - but still looking. Do have an assortment of brushes that I can make work.

Not a big deal I have a couple of potential motor sources.

FYI:  I just installed a WILDGAME INNOVATIONS 12 VOLT DC FEEDER MOTOR p/n 12VM...larger diameter than the OEM motor. Had to file off a little on the outer bushing side cap but it fits and is bi-directional ;)

Picked up another one of those heaters on ebay for $48 shipped..it has the 12v motor, works and is good to go.

Ed...Were you able to use the fan blade from the old motor?
