Title: Hey sammons where do I get LARGE grinding discs?
Post by: EDNY on June 10, 2017, 11:27:52 AM
Stocked up good with 4-1/2" grinders and discs and have two large two handed grinders with 5/8" 11TPI heads. Been replacing a steel deck on my car hauler and need an aggressive unit to remove those "metal stumps" left over from the plasma cutting.

Anyone make an aggressive 8" grinding disc for my two large 5/8" 11TPI grinders?

Thanks

Ed I use the 3M Fibre Disc's in 24 grit on my big old Black & Decker body grinder. I use the 9" disc w/7/8" hole, this has a metal flush nut that fits thru the grind disc. The thread shaft on grinder is 5/8". I use it with either metal or fiber backer.  3M makes many different outer size but most have the 7/8" hole for the thru mount nut for 5/8" shaft. Most auto parts stores carry these and are about $12 bucks ea unless you buy a full box for discount.  They really last a long time and grind goobers off quick (and sharpen a lawn mower blade in a hurry ;D)

Add: just looked up part # - Green Corps #01929
Hope that helps you!

Ed, I found a lot of backer pad and nut sets on google shopping. I bought (years back from Mac tool truck)  a fiber/phonolic assortment. It came with 8 7/8" down to 3". You tend to wear the outer edge first, pending how you are holding during grinding. They trim off easy, just change to smaller dia backing. We use to "star" trim the discs to get into inside radious curves. When I got down to 3-4" I would mount them up to my little 3" angel head air grinder. I got my money's worth out of them :)

Now I know the technical name "goobers" ;D

BTW: Had to change my post they are both 5/8" 11TPI (slipped in a 3/8 by mistake)

Haha, kinda figured that Ed. Since the first size was 5/8x 11tpi ;D
There are cheaper discs out there but It's not a bargan if you replace 3-4 of them to one 3M disc. Had to prove that to dad back in the early 80s ;)

When I replace the steel diamond plate decking will use my mig on the outside and my stick welder underneath...haven't fired up the AC/DC stick welder in about 15 years, have tons of rods and know they don't mind a little rust :D

Thanks again
