Title: 1924 dodge roadster updates
Post by: ghost28 on January 31, 2017, 05:54:29 PM
I figured l would put this over here. I have been cutting the 28 chevy sedan body panels to start the build of the back of the roadster. I cut the quarters apart and reassembled them for the corners, and then cut the back panel down 5 inches since the chevy cowl is 6 inches wider. Clamped and tacked the three pieces and then check for fit to the front half. Ilike what I see so far. :D

I went to another swap meet today and got some out side door handles, and picked up an adaptor for the 400 pontiac engine to a chevy auto transmission. Oh and some girl scout cookies

Man I am hppy I went back to the swap meet today. I caught these guys leaving early that had this brand new model a bed, with a little bit of back and forth I was able to get it for the 24 dodge for $620,00..Ifigured I couldn't buy the brake and steel to make it for that amount. Iwill have to take the ford logo off.

I will have to take the ford logo off.
What are you going to call it? :o
Title: Re: 1924 dodge roadster updates
Post by: sixball on February 05, 2017, 06:13:24 PM
Nice score! I think someone makes a no-name tailgate. You could easily sell the Ford one for enough to buy one. Are you going to leave it long? I really like the un-cut beds. Longer wheel base, more storage, room for a bigger cooler, and it won't look like a screwy Fad-T. You could call it a DORDROLET. :)

Yep gonna leave it  long bed. I heard that there is a aftermarket tail gate out there.  I could call it a forchedo          A nice japanese name

You could roll in some GHOST FLAMES while you're at it. I sort of think it would be too quite on what I'm seeing as a clean basic kind of  build. You have done some cleaver crafty things here and a plain tailgate would fit. But.......... :)
Title: Re: 1924 dodge roadster updates

Dang Ghost, your going to have a cool and cheap '24 Dodge Model AAP (all american parts) Roadster pick up there!  ;D You got one heck of a deal on that bed. Looks like your going to have great leg room also!
I would think about selling the Ford tailgate and getting a plain one. Then either get "Ghost" or "Dodge" in vinyl or magnetic (that would get the Dodge boys scratching their heads). It would make selling a bit easier. Rebel Roy/Sugar Pudd'n  lettered on the doors or etched on the glass can de-value to the new owner.(i've done that before)  ;)

Not running yet. buying parts though. I got a frame the guy said it was a 26 turns out its a 29  chevy which is better. It was used as a hay rack for quite a few years so the frame is real clean.

That is a nice one. I drug a '29 out of the brush but while I was loading it I saw that it had been in a fire and it is bent and warped from the heat and probably has no strength. Are you going to use the front suspension setup?

Probably wont use it,but it's in pretty good shape so nothing is set in stone yet. I have the whole thing stripped down to just the frame now.

I really like the looks of parallel leafs in the front. It does create lowering issues without a ridiculous  dropped axle. I like the old 3 springer style used a lot in the early days when Ford was not the norm. Here is a link to a thread on the HAMB.

Just gathering parts. I have everything to build the complete frame, but I have a 3 ford coupe in my shop doing some updates to it, but once it's gone GAME ON. A friens bought a matchbox style model a rodster pickup by for me now I have my inspiration for the build.

I think I have enough parts to build this hot rod. I still need a grille shell, hood or bonnet if you prefer, tires, drive shaft, and steering collumn and wheel. O f course all the little trinkets like brake lines and assorted crap. Oh and some rear gears for the nine inch. DANG SO CLOSE.
Title: Re: 1924 dodge roadster updates

I prefer hood, over bonnet.
Being that this is an American build. Lol.
Some of the older car guys down here call Coles, scuttle. I tell em, if they refer to an American car, then they should use American terms. :D

Since selling the Buick I have been spending time on the 24 dodge pickup. I have gotten the frame boxed, all the suspension mocked up, and found a 5.7 hemi and 5 speed automatic from a 2006 dodge ram. I couldn't be happier with the way it fits the frame. This little truck should be a rocket f I can get traction. Have a look guys

i found a company on line called hot wire. They specialize in all makes and model harnesses. For about 1,400 dollars they will make a harness for the engine and trans complete with a 4 wire hookup, and reprogram my computer for a plug and play setup.

Reminds me of the Gas Monkey Garage episode when they put the HellCat engine in the 1967 Dodge Dart.  It all came down to syncing the PCM and BCM.

Here is the story..."Diablosport" is another outfit that might help with the harness/programming.

PCM i know of, but bcm? Ed your scaring me

The BCM (body control module) in GM stuff controls stuff like interior functions - lights and the VATS (vehicle anti theft system) etc.  If the correct key is inserted in the ignition the BCM sends the OK signal to the PCM (powertrain control module) and allows the vehicle to deliver fuel or spark to run.  I believe in the Gas Monkey episode the BCM wasn't communicating with PCM..that's where the tuners come in.

oh I see. hot wire is going to reprogram the computer and take all the crap out of it so i shouldn't have to go throuh that. I won't have to have an original key to make it run.

Keep me posted I'd like to know if they can just program the PCM to eliminate the BCM in the MOPAR stuff.

That's one thing (drive by wire) that can be tuned out in the LS engine series to use the conventional accelerator cable drive.  You might want to verify that the BCM is/isn't also required just in case?

I'm sure you are not the first guy to put one of these in pre-computer home. I was surprised back in '08 when we did a demo at Bonneville and ran my 270 GMC on early '90s GMC TBI. It took just a few wires and sensors. Ignition would have only been a few more. It took about 30 minutes to get it running. I know new stuff is more complicated because of the integrated systems but you can do it.
Title: Re: 1924 dodge roadster updates
Post by: ghost28 on June 05, 2018, 09:55:10 PM
The engine and trans are mounted in the frame. I brought the body home to check on fit, it all looked good until I sized up the bed. I would have had to cut the bed down 5 inches to make it work, but that would have made the little truck look like a t bucket. I decided since the firewall needed to be replaced along with a 6.5 inch setback it was the place to cut, and leave the bed proportions alone. I then set the cab in it's place and set the 28 chevy fenders and boards, well I found out the 29 ford bed is quite a bit narrower than a chevy bodyby about 6 inches, but no problem I made a couple of extension to mount to the bed so the fenders will be in the proper position just like they did ford trucks just a bit larger. HAVE A LOOK.

Thats quite the project Ghost. Looks like you have a plan. I still find it strange that 6yrs ago I never seen a '24 Dodge. When I got my Dodge  coupe I had no idea what year it was or if it was actually a Dodge. Friend of my dads ID'd it for me. When I give it to my buddy Shane, he ran across another '24 coupe and bought it at an auction 6 months later. ;D

the rear fender looks good widened in this way , reminds me of my friend Bobs 1931 ford pickup rear fenders.  That's the way ford did them.  Breaks up what could be have been a very wide looking rear fender.  Gets my vote.

My friend frank bought a 1925 dodge bros 4 door sedan and street rodded it with a 454 under the hood and later replaced with a 1984 TPI 350.  Big problem with these cars is filling the rear wheel wells as they came with a 33" tall tire and a large rim 17--20" and tire are difficult to source.  Silly narrow side walls are not the program on these.

gonna be another great GHOST build

Thanks guys. chopper. the 29 chevy frame cuts out past the side of the bed, so this way is the less of 2 evils. Madmike. thank heaven these are 28 chevy rear fenders so it won't be as hard to fill them up. sammons I know what you mean when I started this build the very next swap meet had a phaeton 24 dodge project with a hemi for sale.
I have all the fenders and boards installed, I also set the 28 chevy radiator shell where I want it to sit.

I have been working on the dodge lately finishing up a lot of fitment issues, so far so good. I spent the day making the folding top mechanism I have a few support bars to finish tomorrow, then install the correct hardware and test the folding of it. I did chop about ten inches out of the windshield posts and they ae still close to 15 inches long.
