Title: Gas station petrol tank caps, lids, tobys.
Post by: Kiwijeff on December 08, 2016, 07:56:54 PM
There's not much on the net about these things, but my sparky is a mad collector of em.
He travels to the Bendigo swap meet in Australia every year, and buys a few.
Anyway, he's got a huge collection of these cast iron caps, that we all drive across regularly, when we pull into a gas station, to full up.
I've painted at least fifteen of these things, in the company colors.
I wish I'd taken more pics, but my sparky just came back from Australia with five more, and this 1930s Shell one, is the first I've painted, out of this new haul.
It needs a few touch ups, before I give it back, but thought I'd share it here, and by creating this thread, it'll help me to document them better.

Last one I did, a BP one.
No idea of its age.

Being cast iron, they're heavy. Also you can't really stop cast iron from rusting, so we sand blast em, then I etch prime before painting.
They should last a while before the rust starts to show.
I'll have to get an invite to his toy shed for pics of the ones I've done.
My sparky owns a nice og Model A Sedan, and some nice restored Indian motorcycles.

I'd love to find a Shell sign.
Since that's my last name. Too bad no relation with the company.

I think that would be nice to have things like that hanging on the wall in a man cave

If related, you could be worth millions.
I could probably get you one, but being cast iron, the postage may be expensive.

Here's a few pics my sparky sent me, from another collector of these things.

My wife owns a Shell station in Connecticut and I don't have a sign either.

The owner picked up the HCS cap yesterday, and is dropping in the next one to paint today.

Golden Fleece was an Australian gas ccompany, that was started by H C Sleigh, in 1916, and finished in 1981.
Here's some great info and pics.

Here's the next one.
Texaco, and it's an old one.
We think the weird hole is a casting floor.
It'll be red with white lettering.

It is so cool that there are so many different designs. I'm always surprised at how many really interesting auto related collectables are still out there to be found.

Not many collect these things, but if you want to, you need to have some spare change.
I know of one that cost my sparky $500 kiwi!
If you look em up on the interweb, there's not much about em.
In fact, I've possibly posted more about em, than anyone person.

The Shell one is done, and I redid another one I'd done awhile back to match.

I wouldn't mind having one hanging in the garage but for $500.00 ....Yikes......

Moose, I'm sure you could find one laying around for cheap, or free.
Any old closed down gas stations usually have em laying around.

I've just got two more to paint.
Owner imported them from Australia, like the last three or four.
These things are heavy, so you need to secure them to the wall pretty good.

Next two.
I started painting them today.

Thanks guys.
I'm definitely getting better as I do more.
Owners lucky I do em cheap for him.
As a novice painter, I can't charge what it's really worth, for the amount of work they take, but before me, my buddy was doing them.
He wasn't getting paid as much as I am, and he's a professional sign painter and pinstriper.
The owner got pissed off with him taking to much time to get em done, so I got the job.
It's a fun thing for me, for now.

Something a little different, this is a base for a metal sign.
Just got this done last week.
